The Washington Mystics matchup against the Portland Fire on Sunday ended with the Mystics securing a close 105-100 victory. But the win also altered the 2026 WNBA playoff bracket dramatically.
According to Bleacher Report’s Joseph Zucker, the Mystics’ win over the Fire earned them the No. 7 seed in the 2026 WNBA playoffs. This means that seven of the eight total playoff spots being secured, with just one spot remaining.
The Washington Mystics earned their first WNBA playoff berth since 2023 with Sunday's win over the Portland Fire paired with a loss from the Chicago Sky.

Zucker further pointed out that Washington clinching a playoff spot was surprising, especially considering its roster consists mostly of rookies and second-season players.
“Ironically, the 25-year-old Amoore is one of the oldest players. Washington is bucking almost every historic precedent. Teams with rosters this young have by and large been very, very bad,” Zucker wrote in his August 24 Bleacher Report article.
However, Zucker emphasized that Washington entering postseason wasn’t completely unforeseen. The team’s roster includes young stars like Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen, both of whom made All-Star team as rookies.
Both started all 34 games this season. According to StatMuse, Citron has been averaging 16.9 points and 4.2 assists per game, while Iriafen has recorded 15.2 points and 9.3 rebounds per game.
Since the franchise was founded in 1998, the Washington Mystics have made 15 playoff appearances, and won the WNBA Championship once in 2019.
But how deep into the postseason the Mystics’ playoff journey continues will depend significantly on who their young stars go up against.
Who are the top 8 WNBA 2026 Playoff seeds?
In the same Bleacher Report article, Joseph Zucker listed the top seven confirmed seeds for the WNBA postseason. At the very top stands the Minnesota Lynx with an impressive 31-7 win-loss record, followed by the Golden State Valkyries (25-11).
After that comes Las Vegas Aces (26-13) in the third spot, with the Atlanta Dream (24-13) snagging the fourth seed. The Indiana Fever comes in fifth, with a 25-14 record, followed by the New York Liberty with 23 wins and 15 losses.
With Washington snagging the seventh seed, the final spot is a toss up between the Dallas Wings and the Portland Fire.
This means Mystics stars Citron and Iriafen would have to go against MVP favorites like Aces center A’ja Wilson, and Fever guards Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell. Now, what remains to be seen is whether raw talent can overwhelm more experienced WNBA stars.
