WNBA increases Bay Area presence with latest All-Star news

The San Francisco Bay Area and the Golden State Valkyries will host the 2027 AT&T WNBA All-Star Game.

The WNBA officially announced the news on Tuesday. It will be the first time the WNBA All-Star Game comes to the Bay Area, giving one of the league’s newest teams one of its biggest stages yet.

“We are thrilled to bring AT&T WNBA All-Star to the San Francisco Bay Area for the first time,” WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said, per WNBA.

The WNBA first announced the Valkyries as its 15th franchise in October 2023. The team played its very first game in May 2025, and the response from fans was incredible from the start.

The Valkyries sold out all 22 regular-season home games in their debut year, welcoming a record-breaking 397,408 fans. It broke the WNBA all-time single-season attendance record previously set by the Indiana Fever.

By May 2026, the Valkyries made history again when CNBC valued the franchise at over $1 billion. It became the first women's sports franchise in the world to hit that milestone.

Engelbert also cited the Valkyries and their fans as a major reason for the decision.

“Valkyries fans have embraced this team with an extraordinary level of passion and enthusiasm, and we can’t wait to see that energy on full display for an unforgettable All-Star weekend next summer,” the WNBA Commissioner added, per WNBA.

The event will take place inside Chase Center, the same arena that hosted the NBA All-Star Weekend in February 2025.

“Hosting AT&T WNBA All-Star in only our third season is an incredible honor and a reflection of everything this fanbase, this region, and this organization have built together,” Valkyries President Jess Smith said, per WNBA.

How the Golden State Valkyries are dominating on and off the Court

In their debut 2025 season, Golden State became the first expansion franchise in WNBA history to make the playoffs in its inaugural year.

Head coach Natalie Nakase earned WNBA Coach of the Year honors for guiding the team during that landmark run.

That winning momentum has continued into the 2026 season. The Valkyries secured their second straight playoff berth with a 78-70 victory over the Dallas Wings. It pushed their record to 25-9—the second-best mark in the league.

With that win, Golden State became the first expansion team in WNBA history to make the postseason in each of its first two seasons.

At the same time, the fan support remains unbeatable. The Valkyries have sold out all 41 home games in franchise history at Chase Center, which fans proudly call 'Ballhalla.'

So, everyone around the league already saw that moment coming.

At the All-Star Game in Chicago last month, WNBA Players Association President Nneka Ogwumike noted that players across the league felt Golden State would be the ideal host for the midseason event, and the league clearly agreed.

The festivities will span two days alongside the All-Star Game. The Kia WNBA Shooting Stars and State Farm WNBA 3-Point Contest are set for Chase Center on Friday, July 30.

The All-Star Game itself follows on Saturday, July 31. And the sixth annual WNBA Live, presented by AWS, will run at Moscone Center, alongside community impact events across the Bay Area.
