As American Sports Journalist Jason Whitlock hit the X with yet another Caitlin Clark critique, fans followed up with twice as harsh criticism of him instead.
“If I understand correctly, winning the MVP this season would qualify Caitlin Clark for a supermax contract and pretty much break up the Indiana Fever,” his long X post read on August 31, 2026. “Content creators from all over the country (not Indiana) are staging a jihad to win Clark the MVP.”
Per Whitlock, Kelsey Mitchell has been the MVP-caliber player more than Clark has. But the content creators and endorsement partners “don’t really care about winning” and want a “Caitlin solo act," the individual player over the team.
This will help these outside entities but will break down the Fever. If CC accepts the supermax, the Fever will have to adjust the cap space by roster turnovers. Whitlock also went on about a racialized framing.
But fans weren't having it.
Fans erupted at Jason Whitlock
The Fever guard is leading the league in assists (8.4) and third in scoring (22.5). Her elite playmaking has brought out the best in Mitchell, the 2nd-leading scorer (25.0). Whitlock called the MVP talk a “one-woman, stats-driven war.” Fans firmly opposed.
“Wow. That is some serious mental gymnastics to get from reality to Whitlock land. Truly pathetic attempt to diminish CC as well. Disgusting take and commentary on sports fans in general,” wrote a fan.
Another added, “Don’t you get tired of embarrassing yourself whenever you talk about Caitlin Clark? I’ll say it again: your hate-obsession is sick. As a fan of yours, take the time to read the nonsense you write about Caitlin before hitting the post button.”
In the Fever’s latest 111-91 win over the Connecticut Sun, Mitchell posted 34 points and 4 assists while Clark added 34 points and 12 assists. And it’s not just the one-day stats. Fans pointed out that Mitchell or others score, but Clark creates those shots.
“Kelsey has been the best shooter, not the best player. That would be CC,” one wrote. Another wrote, “Without Caitlin, Kelsey wouldn't have all those 20+ games.” “Kelsey Mitchell is an incredible offensive machine. But she does not generate 41.4% of the offense for the Fever. That’s Caitlin Clark,” stated one.
For a player who has pretty much revolutionized the league with record audiences, ticket sales, and popularity in women's basketball, there’s a growing trend to overly scrutinize her or minimize her impact. A fan summed it up.
“Because of the Clark hatred from the rip, fans exaggerate her performances on a nightly basis, and haters minimize her achievements on a nightly basis,” they wrote.
With that being said, which side are you leaning on, Whitlock or the fans? Let us know in the comments.
