Despite Caitlin Clark’s blockbuster 37-pointer in the Indiana Fever’s recent 113-90 win over the Chicago Sky, former WNBA player and analyst Sue Bird found a way to criticize. And fans weren’t happy.
“To go along with this impressive play in the first half, she's (Clark) obviously having a great season, is five turnovers,” Bird said on NBC’s halftime show, American Express At The Half. “Those five turnovers, Chicago has turned into points on the other side.”
Now, the conversation is about the league’s third-leading scorer (22.1) and assist leader (8.3), who shot Sunday’s 37 points on 13-of-24 from the field, 8-of-12 3Ps and 3-of-4 free throws. Although she is averaging 4.6 turnovers this season, her 5 TOs came in just the Q1 that night.

Clark also added 10 assists and 3 rebounds, recording her 5th 30+ point game of the season. But Bird believed the Fever 22 needs to cut down on turnovers for even better play.
And this didn’t go over well with the fans.
Fans Erupted at Sue Bird
Undeniably, turnovers have been an issue in CC’s play throughout the season. But when you're putting the ball in the net 37 times and making ways for teammates as the dominant ball-handler, fans argued that high TOs are inevitable.
“What is this obsession with Turnovers from extreme ball-dominant players? They're going to accumulate Turnovers by nature of their playstyle. Steve Nash was regularly top of the league in Turnovers at his apex,” wrote a fan.
Clark broke several of Bird’s offensive, double-double, single-season, single-game assists, and All-Star Game assist records in just 3 seasons. Bird even ranks 2nd in the league’s all-time turnovers record. And fans brought these up.
“Sue might be a little salty that CC is putting up numbers that expose how mid her stats were. Sue was on some great teams and won 4 championships. But her numbers don’t support her reputation as the best point guard,” wrote a fan.
Another added, “She’s a HOFer, and led the league in turnovers 2 seasons in a row.”
Many also noted how only a few of CC’s turnovers were her own, and the rest were on her teammates.
“One of those five turnovers was a foul that wasn’t called by the referee. And three of those five turnovers were teammates who couldn’t catch a ball,” one wrote. Another added, “She's (Bird) a hater and a terrible analyst.”
While fans concluded that CC's 37 points and 10 assists made up for those 5 TOs, what are your thoughts on this? Let us know in the comments.
