Nobody saw this coming, and the duo of Serena and Venus Williams will hope their opponents don't as well. The legendary sister duo will finally reunite after four years for Wimbledon action.
On Tuesday, the Williams sisters were sent a doubles wild card invitation by the organizers at the All England Club, reuniting one of the most successful and dominant doubles teams of all time.
Serena and Venus Williams have won 14 Grand Slam titles together in doubles, the first one in 2000 and the last one in 2016. Funnily enough, their first two doubles victories also came as wild cards, as the duo sets up probably for one last dance.
Serena made her highly anticipated comeback last week at Queens, four years after playing what many expected to be the final match of her career at the 2022 US Open.
In addition, she has been preparing for doubles after partnering with Karolina Muchova and Victoria Mboko in her first two tournaments of her WTA tour.
Meanwhile, 45-year-old Venus Williams is going into Wimbledon after losing all seven of her singles matches this season. But she was able to grab a win in doubles alongside Britain's Katie Boulter at the Madrid Open in April.
For some fans, it still feels unreal that the Williams sisters are back in action. Even Serena thought it was impossible, until she was inspired to return thanks to her elder sister and oldest daughter.
Serena Williams Reveals What Made Her Return to the Court
Soon after retiring from tennis, Serena had her second daughter, a complete body transformation, and a career focus on the business side of things.
However, Serena said she was inspired to return by her elder sister's run to last year's US Open women's doubles quarterfinals and a conversation with her oldest daughter, Olympia.
"I had no intention of actually being here today, to be perfectly honest with you," she said. My daughter Olympia told me I should play with Venus. She's always right."
"I think I was really motivated by what Venus was doing that year in the [US] Open doubles. I thought she played really well."
While Serena is all set to perform in the doubles category, she still feels underconfident regarding her singles return at SW19.
"You think I'm ready for singles? I need to get to work."
The Wimbledon starts on June 29, and the nostalgia will be through the roof watching the Williams sisters go at it once more, probably for one last time.
So, what do you think are the chances of the Williams sisters going far in the competition? Let us know in the comments.
