Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark (22) reacts during the second half of an WNBA basketball game against the Seattle Storm, Sunday, May 17, 2026, at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

Why Critics Claim Caitlin Clark’s Turnover Problem Has Reached a Tipping Point

While Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark has broken many records with her insane statistics, one major flaw hangs over what is otherwise an already legendary WNBA career: turnovers.

In each of her three seasons with the Fever, Clark has averaged at least five per game. As a rookie, she led the WNBA in turnovers with 78 more than the next player.

Yet another example was added in the Fever's game against the Golden State Valkyries. While the 24-year-old led her team in points, she simultaneously also led them in turnovers, with five in total, including two during crunch time.

As a playmaker, CC22 is phenomenal. In fact, some might say she is the best the league has ever seen. She recently became the fastest player to hit 1,000 points and 500 assists in her career in 59 games, shattering the previous record held by Sue Bird (82 games).

However, such production has come with historic turnover numbers, as Clark committed a total of 223 turnovers in her rookie year. The previous record was 137.

A production like this in just her first year could have let her off the hook, but things do not seem to change for the better in her third year as well.

To her credit, you’ll notice many dropped passes from her teammates, which unfortunately contribute to her inflated turnover numbers, though they are not necessarily her fault.

Still, while Clark may be one of the best playmakers around, she leads the league in turnovers with 5.2. The question now remains whether the 2024 No. 1 overall pick can trim the risky passes and unforced errors to maximize her offensive impact.

While it is a cause of concern, NBC announcer Kate Scott has told everyone to put the brakes on for now.

NBC's Kate Scott Defends Caitlin Clark's Huge Turnover Rate

During the fourth quarter of the Fever's win over the Seattle Storm on May 19, Scott defended Clark after she posted five turnovers in just 24 minutes of action.

She believed that these numbers are quite normal and took the example of the turnover rate posted by the best of the best in the NBA.

“We all read the comments, right? We see that some folks have a problem with how much Caitlin turns the ball over, they’re always looking for something,” she said.

“So I looked things up, just compared to the M-NBA, leaders in assists. Nikola Jokic, about 10 assists per game, four turnovers a game. Cade Cunningham … about nine-and-a-half assists per game, four turnovers a game himself. So calm down, everybody.”

It is true that Clark holds most of the ball and is the main creator for the Fever in every game. But to be the greatest offensive player this league has ever seen, Clark needs to find a way to become as efficient as possible going forward.

Do you think Caitlin Clark can fix her turnovers as the season goes on? Let us know in the comments.
