Cameron Brink missed out on one of the most important games of the season against the New York Liberty due to an ankle injury. But head coach Lynne Roberts was not too worried about it and gave us, sort of, a timeline of her return.
Following the 98-97 thriller in the 30th anniversary game of the WNBA, Roberts spoke to the media and revealed that Brink is absolutely fine and her being sidelined is more of a precaution.
“She’s doing great. She had a nasty ankle sprain. It’s just a matter of treating it and there’s still swelling and all that stuff. ... I don’t have a timeline. A couple weeks, I think, would be positive thinking.” Roberts said.
Brink initially suffered the ankle injury in the second half of the game against the Golden State Valkyries. The Sparks lost that game, and Brink exited to the locker room and did not return to the court.
This is the second consecutive contest Brink has missed for the Sparks, and it remains to be seen when she will return to the hardwood.
If Roberts' prediction of around two weeks is correct, then Brink will now go on to miss games against the Toronto Tempo, Seattle Storm, and two against the Indiana Fever at the very least.
Brink was just getting into the groove of things in Roberts' system, being a legit threat for opponents on both ends of the paint. In 14 games played this season, Brink averaged 9.2 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks
While Brink is out for a while, the Sparks could not be more relieved to have star guard Kelsey Plum return to action following her left leg injury.
Kelsey Plum's Return Against the New York Liberty
Plum scored just 12 points on 5-14 shooting while going 1-7 from three, along with 7 assists. While it was not her best performance, it made sense as she was just coming back from injury. She was also seen taping her left leg in the first quarter itself.
But it did not matter in the end, as Nneka Ogwumike saved the Sparks with a game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer, and Plum had nothing but appreciation for the veteran and how the Sparks made a comeback out of nowhere.
“That would be called God. If you don’t believe in God, that’s exactly what that is,” Kelsey Plum told Justin Russo after the game.
Before her injury, Plum was having an MVP-calibre season with the highest points averaged per game. While three-time MVP A'ja Wilson has now taken that mantle with 25.7 points, Plum is still sitting pretty at 23.9.
Still, the season is pretty long to catch up to Wilson, and with the Sparks returning to 0.500 with an 8-8 record for the season, we could very well see the Sparks participate in the playoffs for the first time since 2020.
So, do you think Kelsey Plum will overtake A'ja Wilson sooner or later this season? Let us know in the comments.
