“We Really Locked In”: Breanna Stewart Explains Liberty’s Win Over Aces

Breanna Stewart remains the one constant the New York Liberty can rely on whenever the going gets tough, as she produced one of the best individual quarters of the season against the reigning champions, the Las Vegas Aces.

Stewart took over the fourth quarter,  scoring 12 of her game-high 20 points in the final 10 minutes to secure the 87-86 win for the Liberty over the Aces. She also contributed with 6 rebounds and 4 assists.

Speaking after the game, Stewart revealed the reason they were able to see out the Aces and the fact that the Liberty lost back-to-back games made the team more resilient.

"I think the biggest key to success was we really locked in on the game plan. You know, obviously, we just dropped two games, we're not happy about it, but this team is resilient, we want to be better, and today was a good step in the right direction." Stewart said.

It seems like Stewart is just getting better every season, as teammate Han Xu never gets tired of seeing Stewart go off like she did late.

“Every time she got the ball, we were like, ‘Yeah, she’s gonna make that shot,’” Han said. “She’s very strong and tough, and I’m very happy to play with her.”

While Stewart did most of the heavy work, she was not alone, as Sabrina Ionescu finally had a defining game after her back injury. She scored a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds to steer the Liberty clear of the Aces.

The Liberty and the Aces will have a rematch on June 30 for the Commissioner's Cup title, as the rivalry between Breanna Stewart and A'ja Wilson continues.

Breanna Stewart and A'ja Wilson Embrace After the Game

As the game clock wound down, Wilson had the game ball tucked under her arm as Breanna Stewart stood in front of her.

Both icons shared a brief embrace at the buzzer, a moment that showed mutual respect between two of the greatest players of this generation.

“Her and I, we’ve kind of been going back and forth and going at it for years now,” Stewart said of Wilson.

“Anytime we do it, we know it’s a big moment and we want to really make sure we make the most of it. So being able to kind of be aggressive, shots were falling for me, and getting the win was obviously the most important.”

Both the Liberty and the Aces have consistently been the best teams in recent years, having fought for the WNBA championship and the Commissioner's Cup in 2023.

They will go at it again on June 30, as Wilson, who was somewhat quiet against the Liberty on Tuesday night, will look to get past the Liberty's stingy defense this time around.

So, who do you think is coming out on top between these two titans? Let us know in the comments.
