‘We’re on a Hunt’: Kahleah Copper Delivers Blunt Reality Check on Mercury’s Struggles

The Phoenix Mercury have lost six straight and now sit last in the league standings. Kahleah Copper gave a blunt reminder that turning things around will require continuous work.

“I think we are searching. We’re on a hunt. I don’t think today really reflects who we are and what we want to be able to represent for the organization, but we’re going to get it right. We’re going to figure it out,” Copper said after the loss.

At the Mortgage Matchup Center, the Minnesota Lynx rolled past the Phoenix Mercury 111-77. Despite that, the 31-year-old guard said after the game that better days are ahead.

"Whether it's individually or just team, you want to just get over the hump to feel a little bit better," Copper added. "But we got to continue to stack the days and practice."

The Mercury never seemed to find their footing in the game. Minnesota scored 32 points in the first quarter and built a 67-40 lead by halftime. The Lynx stayed in control throughout the second half and never allowed Phoenix back into the contest.

The Mercury's top players struggled as well.

Alyssa Thomas finished with just six points on 1-of-6 shooting and committed three turnovers. Copper led Phoenix with 18 points, but it was not enough to prevent another defeat.

But while Copper believes more practice can help turn things around, the Mercury clearly has issues they need to address quickly.

Kahleah Copper Stays Confident Despite Mercury's Slide

The Phoenix Mercury reached the WNBA Finals just one season ago. Now, however, they look like one of the league's struggling teams. Last month, the 34-year-old pointed to the team's defense as a major issue.

Following Phoenix's 97-88 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks on May 22, Thomas made it clear, "You have to want to defend. It’s not easy."

"Players are good in this league... we come in here, and we say it’s three games, it’s four games, it’s five games, but at some point, we got to go out there and defend,” she explained when asked what the Mercury needed to do to return to being a top-three defensive team.

Even with the team's struggles, Kahleah Copper has remained optimistic.

Just over 24 hours before Monday's game, she compared the current situation to her time with the Chicago Sky in 2021, when the team overcame adversity and eventually won a championship.

That mindset has not changed. After Monday's loss, Copper reminded reporters of that experience. “(I) lost 7 straight. I won a championship. That's just what's in my mind right now,” she said.

Copper also stressed the importance of accountability. “I think that we have to continue to hold this standard of what it takes to be a championship team... So for us it's about just everybody looking in the mirror, I think."

Regardless, Phoenix now shifts its focus to the Seattle Storm, hoping to finally build some momentum.
