"We Dominated": Gotham FC coach reacts as Esther Gonzalez's power team to historic win

Gotham FC found a way to rewrite their history in the Utah heat. The veteran forward Esther Gonzalez showed why she is one of the league's best finishers.

Gotham FC came from 1-0 down to defeat Utah Royals FC 3-1 on July 10, 2026, at America First Field in Sandy, Utah. The match did not start well for the visitors, who conceded an early goal and had to fight their way back into the game.

Gonzalez converted the equalizer through a penalty in the 26th minute. Gonzalez then added an insurance goal in the 70th minute to finish the 3-1 comeback. The victory improved Gotham's regular-season record to 7-3-3 with 24 points. “We dominated,” said Gotham FC coach Juan Carlos Amoros.

“We had the best chances that came out of our own work. They also had big chances, but some of them came from mistakes from us." According to the official Gotham FC website, the head coach felt his side controlled most of the game.

Even though total shots finished even at 12-12, the expected goals (xG) battle favored Gotham at 2.35 to 2.0.

Amoros was talking about the quality of the chances created. Utah's most threatening moments came when Gotham made errors, rather than from pressure by the hosts.

Amoros continued his thoughts on the victory. "So, the resilience and the commitment from everyone, it was outstanding. We've been on the road now for nine or 10 days, and today was a team win. Being able to celebrate the hundredth victory for the club is really another landmark.”

Gotham needed a response after dropping a 2-0 result against the San Diego Wave in their previous match. Playing in 94°F heat, the players showed mental toughness by bouncing back from an early deficit to secure a victory.

The result secured the 100th regular-season victory in the history of the franchise. With this win, Gotham became only the 6th club in NWSL history to reach the century mark.

The comeback highlights the team's growing momentum

Gonzalez proved to be too much for the Utah defense to handle throughout the night. Her equalizing penalty in the 26th minute gave the team confidence when they needed it most.

Later in the 2nd half, she put the game away with a finish in the 70th minute after tracking a curled pass.

With her two goals, Gonzalez tied Sam Kerr's long-standing club record of 28 regular-season NWSL goals for Gotham. It marked her 8th career multi-goal game in the league, tying her for third all-time in NWSL history for braces.

She now has six regular-season goals against the Royals, which is the most by any player in league history against them.

The performance showed how dangerous Gotham can be when their tactical systems are working. The result keeps Gotham undefeated in their last five meetings against Utah, with four wins and one draw.

Furthermore, it extended a season trend, as the club remains undefeated this year whenever they hold a lead at halftime.

Next up is a home matchup against the Washington Spirit in the Queens Classic on July 15.

Where do you think this 100th victory ranks among the club's greatest moments?
