Candace Parker is a bona fide WNBA icon and has had her fair share of iconic career moments. However, one moment stands out from the rest, which happened in the twilight of her career.
In the latest episode of the Post Moves podcast with Aliyah Boston, the Indiana Fever star asked Parker about her greatest comeback story.
Parker had spent 13 seasons with the Los Angeles Sparks, but she instead mentioned the series in which her legacy came to a full circle, the 2021 WNBA Finals, representing the Chicago Sky.
"We were down in the clenching game, Game 4 against Phoenix in Chicago at home by 11 to Diana Taurasi, Brittany Griner, and Skylar Diggins. And we clawed our way back up." Parker said.
"Cause I was like, we are not getting on a plane and going back to Phoenix, to the heat. Who wants to go back to the heat? I'm like summertime shy, the best place to be, even though it was the fall. But yeah." The Sky icon added.
Parker knew all too well what was at stake in Game 4 of the 2021 WNBA Finals, having been on that platform twice before. However, she was 0-2 in those games.
It felt like history would repeat itself once more, as the Sky trailed by 9 points entering the fourth quarter.
Till that point in her career, Parker had already experienced a lot of heartbreak with the Sparks. From two back-to-back playoff exits before the 2021 season to getting benched in the semifinals.
But all that hardship became the cause of the fruits she would eventually bear. In her first year as a Sky player, Parker led them to their first championship in franchise history, against all odds, and had quite a revelation after the game.
Candace Parker's Inspirational Speech After the Win
Parker learnt more about the game even as a veteran, more so after becoming a champion for the second time. She revealed postgame that she had a sudden realization of her mentality, and how it affects her during the game.
"I could have four or five WNBA titles by now. And I could also have zero," said Parker, who had 16 points, 13 rebounds, five assists, and four steals.
"I think it's made me really understand how important possessions are. We think about that last-second shot, but every possession is equally important."
"And I think it's had me become less results-driven, and just focus on doing what you're supposed to do. You could literally do everything you're supposed to do and not reach your goal. But are you going to stop working?"
The answer would be no, as Parker eventually went on to win her third championship in 2023 with the Las Vegas Aces, and capped off her incredible 16-year career as one of the greatest women's basketball players of all time.
