Watch: Marta Kostyuk Dances During Set Break vs. Iga Swiatek

Marta Kostyuk stepped onto Court Philippe-Chatrier against a four-time champion, Iga Swiatek, and the opponent who previously bested her in three-set matches without losing a single set. What came next was a surprise to many spectators who agreed this was one of the most shocking results in the history of Roland Garros.

Winning the first set after breaking Swiatek, Kostyuk sat down on her bench with a crowd to watch Swiatek take a rare bathroom break, while the rest of the stadium was entertained by the Swiatek bathroom break DJ, delivering a PA system concert.

Instead of the traditional sitting in silence watching, Kostyuk took this opportunity to loosen up the crowd with a dance that drew loud applause from the Paris crowd.

Kostyuk not only entertained the spectators; she distracted her opponent, and when Swiatek returned looking dangerously relaxed and late, Kostyuk continued to dominate the match with six straight points to win the second set 6-1, winning the match 7-5, 6-1.

This match was Kostyuk's first career victory against Swiatek, and it advanced her to the quarterfinals of the French Open for the first time in her career.

Speaking to the BBC after the match, Kostyuk captured exactly what the moment meant to her.

"I'm still in shock to beat such an unbelievable player who won four times here. I woke up this morning, and I just thought about what an unbelievable day I have to live today to play on Chatrier against Iga."

Given the context, the outcome was even more significant. Swiatek, a four-time Roland Garros winner and ranked 3rd in the world, suffered her earliest exit since 2019. This was on her birthday, and she entered the match without a title in 2026.

And while Kostyuk's story at Roland Garros is just getting started, the tournament has already delivered a painful ending for the player she just dethroned.

Swiatek did not dress it up in her post-match press conference. "Yeah, for sure it wasn't a good day in the office," she admitted plainly.

She went further when breaking down where things fell apart. "Many things, you know, I could manage a bit better, but it was super tough for me today to keep the level that I wanted to. Obviously, at this stage, any opponent in the fourth round, already played a couple of matches, will use the opportunity. So congrats to Marta."

Swiatek did show fight in the first week of the competition and managed to build some good momentum in the second week, but unfortunately, she lost it.

All that is left now is to focus on Wimbledon, where she will be a defending champion with SW19 starting on June 29.

Comment down does Kostyuk's run make her a serious title contender at Roland Garros this year?
