Connecticut Sun center Brittney Griner took her team to a massive 92–63 victory against the Chicago Sky on June 22 in front of a home crowd. While her on-court performance received cheers, her post-game interaction melted hearts.
The moment took place during the postgame press conference. While she sat at the podium to talk about becoming the WNBA's all-time career blocks leader, her young son, Bash, sat right next to her.
X user @deyschasmith captured the scene in a short video clip and highlighted a personal side of the night. Griner said, “Having my family here is big for me. I mean, everything I do, I do for them, and then for him to see that, sitting there courtside with my wife, is amazing. I just have a lot of emotions right now.”
She explained how much it meant to have her loved ones nearby during such a moment in her career. Griner also noted that blocking shots was the only record she tracked during her entire career.
Brittney Griner missed the entire 2022 season while she was detained in Russia, making her milestone even more special. Having her wife, Cherelle Griner, and their one-year-old son watching from courtside made this moment memorable for her.
While the sweet interaction with her son caught everyone's attention, the record she broke made her one of the best defenders to ever play the game.
How Brittney Griner Made WNBA History Against the Chicago Sky
With her performance against Chicago, Griner secured her spot as the WNBA’s all-time blocks leader. She recorded her 878th career block during the game, moving past the late WNBA legend Margo Dydek, who held the record with 877 blocks.
The record originally appeared on The Athletic and was reported by Yahoo Sports.
Dydek actually set that original record while playing for the Connecticut Sun franchise, and the record had stood untouched since the 2008 season.
Griner entered the game with 874 career blocks. She tied Dydek's historic mark late in the 1st half when she recorded her third block. Then, in the 3rd quarter, she claimed the record for herself by rejecting a shot attempted by Kamilla Cardoso.
This new milestone completes a unique defensive double for Griner, who also holds the NCAA all-time blocks record from her college career at Baylor, where she recorded 748 blocks.
Do you think having a close one supporting a player from the sideline boosts their confidence or makes them nervous?
