"Wanna Beat Sue (Bird)": WNBA Star Shares Clear Career Goal

New York Liberty forward Breanna Stewart's four World Cup golds now tie her with Sue Bird, the ex-Seattle Storm guard who retired in 2022 after 20 seasons. Stewart, though, sees a tie as unfinished business.

"I don't have enough. It's never enough," Stewart said in an interview with Jason Sudeikis for The Hollywood Reporter's "Game Recognize Game" series. "Well, first of all, I want to beat Sue."

The self-assurance stems from having the same credentials as Sue Bird. Bird ended up with four WNBA championships, five Olympic gold medals, and four World Cup victories. Stewart boasts three WNBA victories, three Olympic gold medals, and four World Cup victories.

In another video posted by @essentially_w on X, she went ahead to explain the closeness of the race. "So right now, I've just tied Sue," says Stewart in an interview. "She's aware."

This tie happens at a time when Stewart is still in production. Stewart managed 27.5 points in the 2026 playoffs, but only 19 in a 92-82 Game 1 loss as the Liberty are trailing the Atlanta Dream 1-0 heading into Game 2, October 7.

Stewart's comments indicate a rivalry that is publicly visible, while Bird's current position keeps her involved in the situation.

Breanna Stewart Says Sue Bird Knows She Is Coming for Her Records

The open rivalry differentiates this race for a record from just another such attempt. In this case, Sue Bird does not remain just a name from the list since she is now the managing director of the USA Women’s National Team.

Stewart’s response to Sudeikis' query on how she will know that she has had enough is very clear-cut.

“She knows I want to beat her,” said Stewart in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter.

Her last comment expanded this beyond one athlete. "I want to beat all the records," commented Stewart when talking to Sudeikis in the same Hollywood Reporter interview.

Stewart is an MVP in two seasons of the WNBA and was an All-Star selection eight times while winning the World Cup MVP Award for the 2026 season.
