UConn Unveils Emotional Banner for Azzi Fudd in Practice Facility

The Dallas Wings star rookie Azzi Fudd has had her dream come true, as the UConn Huskies women's basketball team has unveiled a banner in the team's practice facility, showcasing Fudd, with the year 2026 written on it as well.

The banner is put up for the players who are the No. 1 draft pick of the latest year. The Wings selected Fudd with the 2026 No. 1 overall pick and thus received her banner as well. The Huskies posted a tweet showing the banner and included Fudd's words after Dallas picked her.

"'I’m gonna have a banner in the gym,'" the team revealed Fudd's wish, "And there she is."

On May 8, 2026, CBS Sports released a video featuring 2025 Rookie of the Year Paige Bueckers and Fudd. In the short video, they had to name every WNBA No. 1 overall pick from the UConn women's team.

While both the players named the legends and themselves, Fudd also said how she felt after being picked and knowing she would have her own "banner in the gym."

"There's a banner with everyone's face in the wall who's the number one draft pick," Fudd said.

"So when I got picked, it was lowkey like, I was like, not the first thing that came to mind, but a little after, like once I left the stage. I was like, 'I'm gonna have a banner in the gym! Like they're all gonna have to look at me the way I looked at all of them.'"

What has Fudd accomplished since being drafted No. 1 in 2026? And who were the other No. 1 picks from the Huskies team?

Since coming to the Wings this season, Fudd has been brilliant, averaging 12.7 points per game and ranking second-highest among rookies. She has also averaged 1.4 assists and rebounds per game.

She also ranks first in blocks and steals among the rookies, averaging 1.5 steals and one block per game. Coming from such a prestigious college, Fudd has showcased her talent, but who are the other legends who got picked first from the Huskies?

Apart from Bueckers and Fudd, the other WNBA No. 1 overall draft picks from the Huskies were Sue Bird in 2002 for the Seattle Storm, Diana Taurasi in 2004 for the Phoenix Mercury, Tina Charles in 2010 for the Connecticut Sun, Maya Moore in 2011 for the Minnesota Lynx, and Breanna Stewart in 2016 for the Storm.

If we look at some of these legends' rookie seasons, Bird averaged 14.4 points, six assists, and 2.6 rebounds per game.

Stewart averaged 18.3 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 3.4 assists. Taurasi averaged 17 points in her rookie season as well. Whereas Moore averaged 13.2 points in her rookie season.

Fudd would need more than 19.2 points and 5.9 assists per game if she wants to break Bueckers' record for averaging the most points and assists for a UConn rookie season.

Charles averaged the most rebounds among the UConn rookies, at 11.7 per game. Fudd has a long way to go if she wants to match that.

Given the college's history, Azzi Fudd has stepped up so far. But will she be able to keep up with the greats and her teammate and senior, Bueckers?

The Wings will play their next game against the Chicago Sky on June 20 at the College Park Center.
