With a record of 4-8 this season, the Chicago Sky are obviously not where they had hoped to be, and Court Vision's Angel McCoughtry and Ros Gold-Onwude dissected what is actually going wrong with Tyler Marsh's team.
Both analysts, especially Angel, were high on the Sky in the offseason following the pieces they put together after Angel Reese's departure to the Atlanta Dream.
Angel went as far as saying the Sky could be a top 3 team this season, but with double the losses than wins, the analysts took a deep dive into what went wrong till now on their podcast, Court Vision.
"The Chicago Sky are trending for all the wrong reasons...To their defence, Rickea Jackson, you know, has torn her ACL. She's out for the season. And they are without other pieces still. Dejanay Carrington was supposed to be an important part of what they're doing. Still not available. Courtney VanderSloot still hasn't come back from last year's ACL injury. " Onwude said.
"So they've lost five of the last six games. They had lost five straight. Then, against the lowly struggling Sun in their sunset season, they got a win there. And then the very next game, they lost to the tempo, the Toronto tempo, and they trailed by as much as 21 in the game. And they got it handed to them. " She added.
The pattern is clear. The Sky's offensive drought is thanks to the injury crisis they already have, with the season just starting.
Moreover, it was never sustainable for the likes of Skylar Diggins and Natasha Cloud to carry all the remaining load without proper backup.
And without proper support comes frustration, which Diggins highlighted following the blowout loss against the expansion side Tempo.
Skylar Diggins Releases Her Concerns Following Loss Against Tempo
While Reese is enjoying her time with the Dream atop the Eastern Conference, the Sky have continued the trend of the past few seasons.
They traded for Rickea Jackson and signed stars like Skylar Diggins and DiJonai Carrington to balance both ends of the ball. But with no worthy wins till now, Diggins reached her limit following the loss against the Tempo.
“We’ve got to have more maturity and more leadership on and off the floor, from the players on the floor and from the staff as well, and more connectivity,” Diggins said in the post-game press conference. “If it was just versus one team, I’d understand that, but now it’s struggles versus a trend of ours.”
They went on to lose another at home against the returning Angel Reese, who embarrassed the Sky with a double-double showcase of 17 points and 17 rebounds.
Times are hard for the Sky at the moment, but it can also get worse as they next face Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Thursday night.
So, do you think the Chicago Sky can, in any way, bounce back to start a run to the playoffs for the first time since 2023? Let us know your opinions in the comments.
