Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham has a knack for making waves off the court with her stylish pregame outfits and strong connection with the fans, but she might have hit a home run by revealing the details of her tattoo.
The tattoo in question is the one on her right forearm, which is neither large nor flashy but has become a staple of Cunningham's appearance, and she finally revealed its much broader significance.
According to Cunningham, the tattoo carries an important message that has helped her guide her through difficult moments. "My family all has the same tattoo. It means, 'Through deep waters, I'll be with you,'" Cunningham explained in a recent video shared as part of her new partnership with SHARx.
The message is inspired by Isaiah 43:2, a Bible verse that reads: "When you pass through the waters, I will be with you."
The wave design with three peaks reinforces Cunningham's devout Christian faith, and is a matching symbol she shares with her mother, Paula, and sister, Lindsey.
From her days at Missouri to years in the Phoenix Mercury, family has always been a central part of Cunningham's success, as she has talked about how her support system has helped her navigate the highs and lows of the pressurising world of the WNBA.
While the tattoo revelation has definitely increased her bonding with fans off the court, this comes at a time when Cunningham is enjoying a good stretch of form with the Indiana Fever.
Sophie Cunningham Continues to Make an Impact on the Fever
The Indiana Fever improved to 8-5 for the season after an 85-75 win against the Connecticut Sun, and the 29-year-old had a major impact on the game to secure the victory, scoring all 11 of her points in the final two minutes of the game.
She then popped off against the Toronto Tempo on Tuesday night with 24 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field, 6 shots from outside the arc, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists.
Overall, Cunningham's production, mainly off the bench, has been a blessing to Stephanie White, as she has averaged 8.9 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game.
With clutch minutes on the court and an impact that transcends basketball, Cunningham has slowly but surely built a reputation that connects sporting and personal values like no other player.
As the Fever marches on to face the Atlanta Dream, one can only predict what Sophie Cunningham will go viral for next.
