It is no surprise that the Indiana Fever has one of the most dedicated fan bases in the WNBA thanks to housing Caitlin Clark. Sophie Cunningham, who is quite popular in her own right, has the utmost appreciation for the Fever fandom.
During the Fever's Sunday night showdown against the Las Vegas Aces, the veteran guard credited the enthusiastic fan base that makes the squad feel like home wherever they go.
“A lot of teams say that every game is a home game, but I do really believe that." Cunningham said.
"I think we have the best fans in the W. Worldwide, I really think wherever we go it's a home game for us, so we just try to work hard, play hard and we just gotta work on our consistency. They show out for us and we need to show out for them.”
The Fever is the only team to have all 44 of their regular-season games nationally televised. While the Fever typically give fans what they want, this has been a rather hit-or-miss season for them till now.
As Cunningham stated, the inconsistency has put the Fever in sixth place in the standings with an 8-4 record at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
On the bright side, their record on the road has improved to 4-4 following a blowout 84-68 victory against the A'ja Wilson-less reigning champions.
Still, there is work to be done, and if Clark and company can stay healthy, lower their turnover rate, and play a bit sharper defensively, they should finish the year in the top half of the playoff picture.
For that, they would need Clark at 100%, as she is still out due to back issues that have been bothering her since the start of the season.
Caitlin Clark is Cautious About Her Injury
The newly minted three-time WNBA All-Star has now missed three games this season due to recurring issues in her back.
However, Clark also revealed ahead of the Aces game that it won't be long until fans can see her on the hardwood again and expressed some caution amid the Fever’s busy schedule.
“Feeling really, really positive about getting back into one of the games at the back-to-back,” she said. “Obviously, it’s difficult coming back in a back-to-back, so we’ll have to be cautious of that," Clark told reporters.
The Fever are in the midst of a seven-day break between games. Clark last played on June 24, which means that if she returns on the front end of the back-to-back on July 8, she would have had 13 days to rest and recuperate.
“But I feel a lot better, and like I said, I’m excited to get back into practice. And this week has been very helpful for my overall health.” Clark added.
As we enter the second half of the season, it will be interesting to see how the Fever manage Clark's minutes until the end of the regular season, for the Fever star to start fresh should they qualify for the playoffs.
So, how well do you think the Indiana Fever can manage without Caitlin Clark currently? Let us know in the comments.
