Texas Pitcher Teagan Kavan Solidifies Place Among WCWS Greats With Championship Win

Teagan Kavan stepped into Devon Park carrying the weight of a repeat bid, a stacked field of elite arms, and a program desperate for back-to-back gold. She left with all three boxes checked.

Teagan Kavan made history by becoming the first athlete ever to earn the honor of Most Outstanding Player twice at the Women's College World Series after the award was established in 1995. This confirmed a legacy that outshines the players from UCLA and Arizona in the 1990s, as well as the players who represented Oklahoma in the past decade.

The statistics following this moment prove she earned it. Kavan competed in seven games, and in that time she earned four wins and two saves, all while posting an ERA of 1.47. She struck out 30 batters and only walked three during 33 1/3 innings pitched.

Kavan herself spoke about her mindset during a postgame media session after the championship win, saying, "I kept telling myself in the bullpen, this is why we work so hard, for this moment, this exact moment right here, so just trust myself. The hard work is over when you get here. It's just going out and playing free."

With Texas leading 2-1, Kavan entered the game in the sixth inning of Game 2. She struck out five batters and retired the other 13 to conclude the game, sealing Texas’s 4-1 victory over 11th-ranked Texas Tech and earning the Longhorns their second consecutive championship.

While the spotlight focuses on Kavan's amazing talent, the program she leads has created a legacy of its own.

Texas Softball's Back-to-Back Title Caps a Historic Run for the Longhorns

Texas Longhorns won their second straight WCWS title after beating No. 11 Texas Tech 4-1 in Championship Series Game 2 at Devon Park. The Longhorns finished their season 53-12 and 11-2 in the NCAA Tournament, and 6-1 in the WCWS. Texas became the fifth program to win the WCWS title after losing the first game.

The Longhorns first won the WCWS in 2025. Now with two NCAA softball titles, Texas's recent run proves they aren't playing a sequel, but making a genuine statement.

With a title in men's swimming and diving in March, another in rowing on May 31, and now softball, 2025-2026 has become a monumental athletic year for Texas. This also adds up to the second-highest number of championships for the program in a single academic year.

Now the Longhorns have 71 total national championships, with 67 of them coming from the NCAA, and they have won at least one NCAA Championship for 11 consecutive years across eight different programs.
