While Caitlin Clark’s sizzling 34-pointer pushed the Indiana Fever into a blockbuster 111-91 win over the Connecticut Sun, Fever HC Stephanie White made one point clear.
“I think we still see a little bit of the inconsistent nature of our group,” the coach said during the postgame availability. “We're fortunate that we have players who can really explode at any moment. But that's not a recipe for consistency, and it's not a recipe for fighting for a championship.”
Despite Clark’s double-double of 34 points and 12 assists, and Kelsey Mitchell’s 34 points and 4 assists, the Sun led the Q1 28-19 and the Q3 23-21. The 2-hour thriller was filled with the Fever’s offensive surge in Q2, Q4, OT, and defensive cracks in Q1 and Q3.

But that’s certainly not the way to go about winning championships, even for the league’s best offensive team (Fever, 97.0 PPG). And that’s why consistency is non-negotiable to the coach.
“When we come back from this break, and we get an opportunity to get in the gym, we've got to continue to work on building that consistency,” she added to the same segment. “I think this is a prime opportunity for us to do that.”
And luckily, her star player feels the same.
Caitlin Clark Echoes Stephanie White’s Sentiment
The 24-year-old is averaging 22.5 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 8.4 assists this season and is currently on a hot streak of 2 consecutive 30+ point games. But the turnover mistakes still persist; 3P percentage is limited to 37.3, and blocks are 0.5. She addressed the need for improvement.
“I still think there's so much more that I can do. And so many areas I can continue to get better and just continue to improve,” she said during the same postgame availability. “I think the whole game was very up and down for us.”
“I thought we came out like sleepwalking a little bit,” she admitted. “We just didn't make shots early. Our defense was pretty sloppy… They (the Sun) were kind of just eating us alive.”
The team’s resilience won them the match. But if the No.4 Fever aims to take the No.1 spot, they’d better dance to White's tune.
