Stephanie White Calls Out Fake Headlines Affecting Indiana Fever's Locker Room

Ever since Caitlin Clark arrived in Indianapolis, the team has been under immense media pressure. Head coach Stephanie White decided to address the growing gap between rumors and what is happening with her players.

White made these remarks during her Wednesday appearance on the Indianapolis sports radio show Query & Company. The interview clip of the audio was shared on X by user @FeverUpdate.

She noted that addressing fake stories takes a toll on everyone involved. “I think if you ask anybody on our team, they’d rather be working on things that will help us in a productive way on the floor, as opposed to making sure everybody’s good on our check-ins,” White explained.

White further added to this by pointing out an issue with social media platforms. She explained that there is a difference between what is true inside the locker room and what gets turned into headlines.

Between automated bots, AI-generated accounts, and people looking for quick clicks, such moments get converted into fake narratives. Because of this, the team has to do regular internal check-ins just to make sure everyone is mentally okay.

The breaking point for these comments came after several online rumors went viral over the last few weeks. People on social media analyzed short videos of bench interactions between White and Clark, claiming there was tension between them.

This speculation grew after the players held a private, player-led meeting following a couple of losses.

One major rumor claimed that White was about to be fired and replaced by Jan Jensen, who is Clark's former assistant coach from Iowa.

Media figures like Skip Bayless even tweeted about the rumor before it was debunked by team sources.

While the staff works hard to keep the players grounded, the players themselves have had to address the constant media narratives.

Caitlin Clark Addresses Sideline Speculation in Postgame Remarks

Clark has also used her postgame press conferences to address the dramatic stories created by media outlets. When asked about a sideline conversation with her coach, Clark dismissed the idea that there was any negative friction.

She explained that it was just two competitive people who desperately want to win basketball games, adding that these types of intense conversations happen all the time in professional sports.

Clark also told reporters that she rides for White and that her coach has her back more than anyone else. According to the star, nobody in the locker room or on the coaching staff thought twice about the bench moment.

Despite the distractions, the team has started to find its rhythm on the court. The Fever have fought their way to a 7-5 record by mid-June. Clark is averaging 19.9 points and 8.1 assists per game.

How do you think teams should handle the rise of AI-generated rumors and social media clips affecting their players?
