Sophie Cunningham Reacts to Viral WNBA Logo Petition After DeWanna Bonner Exchange

Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham has reacted to a viral petition calling for the WNBA logo to be changed to her now-famous pointing gesture.

On June 28, Instagram user @beanexplains launched the petition, suggesting Cunningham’s gesture replace the current logo. Cunningham embraced the idea, liking the post herself. The clip that inspired the petition came from the Fever’s June 22 game against the Phoenix Mercury.

Before Cunningham’s exchange with DeWanna Bonner, Bonner and Caitlin Clark collided in the paint, leading to a stoppage in the fourth quarter with 7:57 left. After that, Bonner and Cunningham exchanged words before Cunningham silently pointed at Bonner, a moment that quickly went viral.

The score was 73–54 in Indiana’s favor when play stopped, with the Fever eventually winning 86–77. Both players received technical fouls.

Sophie Cunningham On How She Came Up With The Viral Gesture

Cunningham became the subject of countless memes after the incident, with even The White House posting a version of the clip on X.

On her podcast Show Me Something Sophie Cunningham & West Wilson, she explained the gesture.

"So stupid, that is the stupidest thing I’ve ever done,” Cunningham said. “I’m telling you, everyone’s like, ‘That is so dumb.’ I think it’s dumb, but it was p****** her off, and I couldn’t help myself. I could not. She was losing her s**t, and all I was doing was literally pointing."

Although the clip went viral, it added to Cunningham’s technical foul count. She now has three this season—May 30 vs. Portland Fire, June 20 vs. Atlanta Dream, and June 22 vs. Phoenix Mercury.

Players get fined $500 for each of the first three technical fouls and $1,000 for each of the fourth to seventh technical fouls. They also get banned for a game after their eighth technical foul.

Cunningham has already tallied $1,500 in fines. With the Fever set to face the Las Vegas Aces on July 5, she’ll need to keep her composure to avoid further penalties.
