With the New York Knicks just two wins from history after 53 years, the NBA Finals are the talk of the town. Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham also joined the conversations and recently shared her support for her favorite Knick.
During the latest episode of her podcast Show Me Something, Cunningham was straight up with where her allegiance sits between the San Antonio Spurs and the Knicks.
While she has been friends with Mikal Bridges since his Phoenix Suns days, and has connections with Jordan Clarkson through his sister Lindsey, she described Josh Hart as her favorite "teammate" in the game.
“I think that Josh Hart might be one of my favorite teammates,” Cunningham said. “Like, he has no ego. He just does whatever the team needs. And, like, he’s a fun dude. Like, he brings the vibes, and I appreciate that.”
This opinion, coming from Cunningham, is definitely worth taking notice of, as the WNBA Commissioner's Cup champion is a player who understands locker room chemistry, especially after managing her high-profile season in the Indiana Fever.
Just like Hart, Cunningham also has an unselfish, team-first mentality. Such players are darlings of the coaches, as no team can function on individual success alone.
Cunningham has always been an example of not showing any ego or pride against the coach's decisions, as she recently revealed how Stephanie White moved her to a bench role after opening the season as a starter.
Sophie Cunningham Backs Indiana Fever Head Coach Stephanie White
Cunningham has always been a fan of the former Coach of the Year Stephanie White's training methods and believes that there is an underlying respect in White’s strong approach toward her players.
“Yeah, I think when a coach wants to challenge you, she just sees your potential,” Cunningham told reporters on Tuesday during practice. “And it’s not always going to be good.”
Cunningham also pointed out how she has been in and out of starting lineups, but still offered support to White's decisions and believes that she needs a coach who challenges her to further improve in the game.
“You need a coach that’s going to challenge you,” the 29-year-old guard said. “You need a coach that’s going to believe in you when sometimes you don’t believe in yourself. And Steph is that for all of us.”
The Fever are currently even on wins and losses with five each, and it seems like a fresh opportunity to start a series of wins and defend their Commissioner's Cup crown this month. They face the Washington Mystics on Monday night.
