As if things weren't already tough for the Chicago Sky with an uneventful season consisting of losses more than double their wins (7-16), star player Skylar Diggins has been on the bench for the past three games due to a knee injury.
With that said, there is still no expected timeline for her return, and she will not return for the next game against the Seattle Storm on Wednesday as the Sky's challenging campaign continues.
However, there have been murmurs that Diggins might be traded before the August deadline. But a report from the Chicago Tribune's Julia Poe suggests that the Sky is currently not in the mood to shop her around.
“Diggins’ absence from the court and the Sky’s ongoing lack of success seemed to set the table for an early fissure midway through the first season of her two-way deal,” wrote Poe.
This comes after Diggins went public with her displeasure about her role and the team’s direction. She signed a two-year contract with the Sky in the offseason.
“But despite this recent discomfort between the two sides, league sources say the front office is not currently making an effort to shop Diggins for a deadline trade.”
Diggins has a lot of issues going on currently, from her move to the bench following Courtney Vandersloot's return from an ACL injury, inadequate resources, and the decision-making of coach Tyler Marsh.
Still, Diggins is averaging 14.2 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 4.9 assists in over 29 minutes despite the commotion.
Ironically, this situation is hugely reminiscent of Angel Reese's time in Chicago, whom Diggins more or less came to replace.
Skylar Diggins is Going on a Similar Trajectory as Angel Reese
With all the drama going on in the Sky once again, we can't help but recall Angel Reese's turbulent two seasons with Chicago.
Reese's tenure also involved huge inconsistencies on the court as the Sky were unable to reach the playoffs in both seasons Reese played.
Moreover, Reese called her teammates out for their incompetence after a defeat and received a suspension for that from the Sky front office.
Senior writer Brian Hamilton revealed that Reese must have felt she could not fulfill her potential with the Sky, and that is why her trade to the Atlanta Dream has felt so refreshing.
"My guess is she didn't feel like Chicago could give her that. The fact that this keeps happening to star Chicago players suggests that's just how it is here." Hamilton said on No Offseason: The Athletic Women's Basketball Show.
They haven't created a structure where you feel like you'll reach your potential," he added.
And maybe that is how Diggins is feeling currently, as a player of her stature has not taken kindly to her treatment in Chicago.
“Now I’m coming off the bench?????? Cool,” Diggins wrote on her Instagram story.
"And the crazy part about it all is that ... I've been so quiet," she added. "I've been so good and quiet."
Only time will tell if Diggins' issues will be resolved, but the trend of star players going through such moments with the franchise is definitely alarming.
So, do you think Skylar Diggins will be the next Chicago star in line to be traded? Let us know in the comments.
