“She Was Bigger Than Jordan”: Nike Criticized as Caitlin Clark Shoe Finally Gets Release Date

There have been numerous instances of Michael Jordan being associated with athletes throughout the years, but the idea of a female basketball player in her debut year has been surprisingly rare. Because of Caitlin Clark, that changed, and Nike might have wasted the opportunity.

The iconic shoe of Caitlin Clark is now available. Nike confirmed the October 1st release date of the Caitlin 1 on social media on Wednesday. However, the news has drawn more criticism than praise; one of the most reputable shoe industry experts in basketball has called it a historic blunder.

Speaking with ESPN, Sonny Vaccaro, a former top shoe executive, did not hold back. "It is one of the biggest failures I've ever seen," he said. "She was bigger than Jordan in some ways because she was a known commodity when she entered the WNBA. The public had grabbed onto her like no one else. She is more than just a basketball player. It makes no sense."

If you take a look at the timeline, Vaccaro's words matter. In October 2022, Clark inked a non-binding agreement with Nike. Following her 2024 WNBA Draft first-round selection, she inked an eight-year, $28 million deal.

Nike’s lack of action was harder to miss as Wednesday’s reveal approached. Nike and Nike Basketball have tweeted twice about the shoe before the announcement.

On Wednesday, the company shared a single photo after a long period of silence. "Coming to a logo near you. Introducing the Caitlin 1," Nike announced the Caitlin 1 in a caption that appeared on both Instagram and X.

Clark, for reference, is presently leading the 9-5 Indiana Fever with a career-high point and assist average of 20.4 per game. Once released on October 1st, the Caitlin 1 will cost $140 for adults.

Questions about Clark's status among fans are now circulating as we approach All-Star season, so the shoe's October release comes at an intriguing time for her overall profile in the league.

Caitlin Clark Drops Out of Top Three in WNBA All-Star Voting

The All-Star fan vote is not going to Clark for the first time in her professional career. The Indiana Fever, buoyed by Clark's star power, became the first WNBA club to have all 44 games televised nationally; this fact alone makes her present position in the poll rankings astonishing.

Out of all the players, four-time MVP A'ja Wilson has 308,249 votes, while 2025 Rookie of the Year Paige Bueckers is in second place with 298,027.

Wilson led the league in scoring (25.6 ppg), rebounding (9.0 rpg), and blocking (2.2 spg). The sophomore Bueckers is having a breakout season, averaging 19.0 points and 5.8 assists per game.

At the present time, Clark has 253,602 votes, which is lower than the over 500,000 votes she had at the same stage last season.

Until the end of the voting period on July 25 at Chicago's United Center, the Fever fans have plenty of opportunity to vote her back into the top spot for the All-Star Game.
