Serena Williams Is Back at 44—But How Long Will Her Return Last?

23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams announced her return to the court for the HSBC Championships. The 44-year-old has not played professionally since the U.S. Open in 2022, and officials were cryptic when asked about her future.

The HSBC Championships are to be held at the Queen’s Club in West London from Monday, June 8. Williams is slated to play doubles at the tournament with the Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko.

Front Office Sports asked the Lawn Tennis Association about Williams' possible return to Wimbledon. They replied, stating they will be discussing the wild cards for the tournament the week of June 15.

This neither confirms nor denies her chances of playing the Grand Slam tournament.

Williams posted a video on her X account with the caption "Good news travels fast." The video displayed the text "Guess everybody heard the news."

The news of Williams' comeback was first a rumor that started back in October 2025, when her name was seen on a document by the International Tennis Integrity Agency as she re-entered the drug testing pool.

However, Williams denied comeback rumors in December 2025.

"I'm NOT coming back. This wildfire is crazy," Williams wrote on social media.

But after U.S. Open winner Andy Roddick discussed rumors about Williams' return on his podcast, both Williams and the Queen’s Club confirmed the news.

Serena Williams herself has spoken about her return in recent times as well.

Williams has dominated grass courts for over two decades. She has won a total of seven Wimbledon singles championships. One of her most iconic grass matchups was against Russian tennis icon Maria Sharapova during the 2012 Olympics. Williams won 6-0, 6-1 to clinch the gold medal.

She makes her return after four years. She was eliminated in the third round of the 2022 U.S. Open by Australian player Ajla Tomljanović. She stating that she would be "evolving" away from the sport

Whether Williams will be seen back in action at the Grand Slam tournament remains unclear, but her return to a grass-court tournament is sure to keep her fans excited for her return.
