Serena Williams highlighted the exact moment when she thought her career was officially over

Serena Williams returned to competitive action alongside her sister Venus Williams in Cincinnati on August 17, marking another step in her long recovery from a serious knee injury.

The sisters ultimately fell to Marta Kostyuk and Peyton Stearns, but the result was secondary to Serena simply being back on the court after an injury that left her facing an uncertain road back.

“It took me two hours to leave the locker room that night, and it’s been a long recovery, which is something I never thought I’d say because I never thought I’d be here sitting and talking to you all again.” Serena Williams said to the press after the match.

Williams felt that the night of the injury was the moment she genuinely wondered whether she would ever return to the court.

“But, you know, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger,” Williams added, as per Cole Bambini of WTA Tennis.com.

Williams made her comeback to Wimbledon in 2026. However, during her match with Maya Joint on June 30, she tweaked her right knee, which caused her to pull out of the competition.

Soon after, she was forced to exit the Doubles competition with Venus Williams at Wimbledon.

Therefore, their return to the competition holds a lot of significance for fans. Williams is now 44 years old and has become a fan favorite over the years.

At this point in her career, she isn’t too worried about losing matches. Speaking to the press on the day of the match, Williams noted that she wasn’t there to win the match.

More importantly, the sisters were just having fun, enjoying the sport they spent their lives playing. The crowd was all for it too, chanting the Williams sisters’ names as they battled their opponents.

The 44-year-old icon loved allowing fans another opportunity to see the sisters play, regardless of the outcome.

Serena Williams embraces the significance of her Cincinnati return

The sisters struggled early, dropping the opening set 6-2 before responding emphatically in the second. Serena and Venus found their rhythm and raced to a 6-1 win to force a deciding tiebreak.

The final set became a fight to the finish. The Williams sisters battled back to level the score at 8-8, but a double fault from Venus gave Kostyuk and Stearns the opening they needed to close out the match 10-8, according to the WTA.

For Serena, however, the result mattered far less than the opportunity to share the court with Venus again.

After a recovery that once made her question whether she would return, simply being back in competition was a victory of its own.
