“Season From Hell for Sparks”: WNBA Fans React to Kelsey Plum’s Injury News

Amid a tough season for the LA Sparks, they suffered their biggest blow of the season. The Sparks' best player, Kelsey Plum, is set to miss time with a leg injury, prompting outrage from the fans on social media.

Plum has been battling with injury throughout this season. Just last month, the Sparks star sprained her ankle during an open practice, missing the next three games.

On Wednesday, June 24, the Sparks PR announced on X that the four-time All-Star was out with a lower leg injury. Plum will be re-evaluated in four weeks.

The current proposed timeline puts Plum's re-evaluation date to July 22. During this timeline, the Sparks play 10 games.

The Sparks (8-8) have struggled all season; without Plum, they're 1-3, underscoring her value.

She was having a solid year, averaging career highs in points (23.9) and assists (6.4), while shooting 52.7% from the field, also a career best.

The Los Angeles Sparks have been hit hard by injuries this season. In addition to Kelsey Plum, Cameron Brink (ankle) and Kate Martin (day-to-day, coach’s decision) are missing time, leaving the roster constantly in flux.

Luckily, the Sparks have an easier schedule during Plum's absence. Half of their games are against underperforming teams like the Chicago Sky (5-12), Seattle Storm (3-15), and the Phoenix Mercury (6-13).

Outraged WNBA fans react to Kelsey Plum's injury

Plum's injury left fans outraged. Many WNBA fans accused the Sparks of negligence towards their star player's health.

"They kept letting her come back early, knowing she had no business playing," a fan commented.

Plum had previously told Justin Russo that she had rushed back from her right ankle injury, which eventually took a toll on her body. According to Russo, rushing back from injury took a toll on the other leg.

Despite her health struggles, Plum continued to play heavy minutes, as she was by far their best player.

"This is why you need to expand the damn roster. It’s too risky for girls to play such ridiculous amount of extended games in one season," a fan said, slamming the Sparks.

"LA Sparks, better start trading. You can't survive without Plum & Brink," another fan suggested the Sparks pull strings to put together a stronger roster.

With the 8th-best record, the Sparks have barely been afloat this season. A fan wrote that it was a "season from hell for the Sparks smh."

However, for some fans, the Sparks' fall would eventually help them draft JuJu Watkins to stay relevant.

"Cathy is really going to rig the lottery and give them JuJu. I'm sick," a fan said.

Do you think the Sparks can survive this stretch without Plum? Let us know in the comments.
