Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas (25) scrambles to get up over Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark (22) on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, during a game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The Phoenix Mercury defeated the Indiana Fever, 111-109.
Sports Illustrated WNBA reporter Grant Young has offered a sharp perspective on the Indiana Fever–Phoenix Mercury match that saw Alyssa Thomas assessed a Flagrant Foul 2 during their game on Wednesday and handed a one‑game suspension. The Mercury edged out a 111–109 win, but Young argues the bigger story is how Thomas’ frustration is tarnishing her legacy.
“Thomas deserves to go down as one of the greatest players in the WNBA,” Young said. “But every time the frustration gets the best of her in moments like these, this is the first thing people will remember. And that’s why these moments with Clark and Reese are doing real damage to Thomas’ legacy.”
In the second quarter with 6:52 left, Caitlin Clark stumbled in the paint. Thomas and DeWanna Bonner pounced on her to grab the ball. During the scramble, Thomas’ fist struck Clark’s throat, and she stepped over her while standing up.
Young explained that Clark’s popularity means casual fans will view Thomas as overly aggressive.
He pointed back to May 25, 2024, when Thomas fouled Angel Reese by wrapping her arm around Reese’s neck and dragging her down in the paint during the third quarter of a Sun–Sky game. The Sun won 86–82.
He further elaborated on how legacies are defined not only by achievements but also by moments people remember. For Thomas, this could tarnish her legacy, as Clark and Reese's fans will remember her as this unnecessarily aggressive player.
Alyssa Thomas' Aggressiveness In Way Of Her Legacy
Thomas is undoubtedly one of the greatest players in the WNBA. She has appeared in six All-Star games and four times on the All-WNBA team, including three first-team selections
Thomas is also a seven-time All-Defensive team player, with three first-team selections. She has averaged 12.6 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 5.2 assists in her career so far.
In the past 18 months, Thomas has been assessed three flagrant fouls. The Napheesa Collier incident resulted in a season-ending injury, raising questions about whether Thomas' play crosses from aggressive to reckless.
In the May 25 game between the Washington Mystics and the Mercury last year, Thomas elbowed then-rookie Kiki Iriafen during a free throw attempt in the third quarter, and received a Flagrant Foul 1.
Furthermore, in Game 3 of the 2025 semifinals between the Mercury and the Minnesota Lynx on September 26, Thomas dove into Napheesa Collier's thighs as the two were reaching for the ball.
Collier broke three ligaments in her ankle after the collision.
These moments of aggressive play will harm Thomas' legacy in the long run, according to Young. For a player seeking Hall of Fame consideration, these moments can overshadow achievements. Thomas' peers like Diana Taurasi and Sue Bird are remembered for excellence, not aggression
For now, Thomas will be out for the game against the Toronto Tempo on June 27.
