'Pinch me': WNBA legend Candace Parker shares surreal meeting with childhood icon Oprah Winfrey

Candace Parker is among those players who have created one of the most complete careers in women's basketball history, yet even someone who is a three-time champion of the WNBA and an inductee into the Hall of Fame can be left speechless.

This happened in the south of France and featured none other than Oprah Winfrey, the Obamas, and the World Cup. The encounter was described by Candace Parker herself via her official Instagram profile.

"I was raised on Oprah… just a girl from Naperville, IL… with Oprah, Obamas, at the World Cup and in the South of France! PINCH ME I'm grateful," Parker wrote on her Instagram in June 2026.

What the caption carries in terms of weight is revealed by looking into where Parker came from. Being brought up in Naperville, Illinois, she saw how Winfrey took control of the entire media environment in Chicago during the era of The Oprah Winfrey Show, a program aired for 25 years starting from 1986 till 2011.

The meeting becomes all the more circular considering the similarity between their career paths after they stopped playing.

Oprah Winfrey traveled to Cannes Lions 2026 to collect the LionHeart Award, which she received for her influence on a global scale and her philanthropy, while Parker has created her own path as well.

Apart from her three WNBA Championships and Hall of Fame induction, she has established herself in the field of sports analysis through TNT Sports and executive producing of social impact documentaries.

The similarity in the way two Chicago legends have built legacies outside the fields they are known for explains why their encounter at Cannes does not seem like a chance but a destiny.

Candace Parker Life After Basketball

Parker retired from playing for the WNBA in April 2024, which only seemed to open up more avenues for her. In fact, her retirement led her straight into what will likely be the toughest second act in women’s sport.

Just days after putting her jersey away, Parker became the president of Adidas Women's Basketball at Adidas. Not just an honorary role; she is responsible for the development of products and overseeing the team of athletes on the roster, such as Aliyah Boston.

Her broadcast presence is equally impactful. Parker is one of the key analysts for NBA on TNT and NBA TV, hosts the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, and also hosts the TNT Sports coverage of Unrivaled, the women’s professional 3-on-3 basketball league.

Beyond the broadcasting booth, Candace Parker co-owns the Angel City FC in the NWSL and is on record expressing her lifelong aim to have partial ownership interests in franchises in the NBA and the WNBA.
