“Personality and how she carries herself”: Sug Sutton Claims Paige Bueckers Is Reincarnating a Legend

For years, observers have tried to find the right comparison to Paige Bueckers’ presence. Now, someone who has played alongside both players has shared her thoughts.

The validation came during a media availability on June 15, 2026. Journalist Dorothy J. Gentry shared a clip of the interview on X, where  Sug Sutton explained the connection between the two guards.

“I see DT so much in Paige,” Sutton said in the clip. “Her game, personality and how she carries herself on the floor.” She expanded on that thought, pointing to their shared traits in leadership and overall presence.

Sutton's opinion carries weight because she spent the 2023 and 2024 seasons in Phoenix experiencing Diana Taurasi up close. She was there to witness Taurasi's historic 10,000-point milestone.

Being her teammate meant seeing greatness daily and watching Taurasi expect that same greatness from everybody around her. When Sutton arrived in Dallas, she noticed those familiar traits in Bueckers.

Sutton mentioned seeing her on social media and then meeting her in person, only to find she is the same grounded person behind the scenes.

Bueckers has been brilliant in 2026, averaging around 19.8 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 5.8 assists per game. She has delivered several impressive scoring performances, including a 31-point game during an 85-70 win over Phoenix on June 11.

That individual success from Paige Bueckers has allowed the Wings to hold a 9-5 record. Sutton's comments felt different because they came from an athlete who has lived inside both intense environments.

However, this is also not the first time someone familiar with Taurasi has seen that same connection.

The Legend Saw Something Similar Years Ago

Taurasi herself recognized these qualities long before they were opponents in the league. She even praised her back in 2021, noting that the young player had far more confidence as a freshman than she ever did.

Later, during a May 2025 interview on The Athletic's podcast, Taurasi noted that she could one day become the best player in the league.

This comparison has been following Bueckers for years. She has been hearing about her similarities to Taurasi since she was in the 6th grade in Minnesota.

They share a storied history at UConn, where legendary coach Geno Auriemma noted their shared flair for rising to the biggest moments.

As a former number one overall pick, Rookie of the Year, and All-Star, she is checking off early milestones while her leadership continues to grow.
