The pressure of the Women's College World Series always reveals big-stage performers. And Marlie Giles proved she is exactly that, as she led Alabama to a 5-1 victory over Nebraska, booking the team's ticket to the WCWS semifinals.
The Crimson Tide coach, Patrick Murphy, could not hide his pride during the postgame media session. He said, "It was just an honor to be in front of the largest crowd for this session. Attendance has been incredible. Thanks to all the fans who buy a ticket to watch us. What a great game. [Jocelyn] Briski was incredible. A one-hitter with six Ks and no walks."
Murphy completed his thought by highlighting the moment of the game. "We didn't give them any momentum. They had a solo home run, but we came back and scored. Marlie [Giles] had a huge hit. If you're familiar with Alabama, our slogan is 'Where Legends Are Made,' and she solidified that tonight – both of them," Murphy stated, according to the Rolltide.

Giles delivered the defining swing in the bottom of the first inning with two outs and two runners aboard. After Jena Young walked, Brooke Wells was hit by a pitch.
Giles looked at a first-pitch strike from pitcher Jordy Frahm and scored a three-run home run, which gave Alabama a 3-0 lead. This marked Alabama's 100th home run of this season.
In the third inning, she drew a walk and drove in another run with a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Kinley Pate to make it 4-0. Alabama only managed 5 total hits as a team, and Giles was responsible for four of the team's five runs.
Giles has now hit a home run in all three of her career Women's College World Series appearances. Alabama's athletic department uses the motto "Where Legends Are Made," and Murphy brought it up because Giles keeps creating these unforgettable postseason memories.
The atmosphere in the press room shifted as the senior captain shared her perspective on the legendary performance.
Marlie Giles' Humble Response Showed Why She Means So Much to Alabama
When reporters asked her about her hitting home runs, she smiled and said, "I would just say I'm very blessed. God has blessed me beyond anything I can even imagine. I haven't hit as many home runs as Lex and Brooke have, but for me to hit it here…I don't have an answer for you except it's His will, His plan. That's all I got for that answer," Giles explained.
She nodded to her teammates Alexis Pupillo and Brooke Wells, who have hit more home runs than her this season.
Of course, Giles was not the only hero of the night. Jocelyn Briski pitched a complete-game one-hitter, striking out six batters without giving up a single walk to earn her 25th victory of the season.
This pitching performance is why Murphy grouped Briski and Giles when he talked about Alabama softball legends.
The victory was added to a long list of milestones in Alabama's 2026 campaign. The team improved its overall record to 56-7. This is their 8th appearance overall in the WCWS semifinals.
Alabama is now in the driver's seat as it prepares for a 1 June 2026, semifinal match against the winner of the elimination game between Texas Tech and UCLA.
Because of the double-elimination bracket setup, the Crimson Tide only needs one more win to advance to the best-of-three national championship series.
Do you think this squad has what it takes to go all the way, or if another team will spoil the run?
