Paige Bueckers Fan Makes Last-Minute Sign Change After Spotting Her in Street Clothes

A Dallas Wings fan learned the hard way on Saturday that pregame interactions between players and fans seldom go according to plan. In the stands, what had begun as a straightforward request for Paige Bueckers quickly evolved into a rewrite.

The supporter arrived at the game with a hand-made placard requesting Bueckers to return her shoes. According to a post shared by thedailywsports on Instagram, the woman took out a marker and began making immediate edits to her message after realising that Bueckers was wearing street clothes instead of her Wings jersey.

The updated sign read, "PAIGE! #5 I AM YOUR BIGGEST FAN! CAN YOU PLEASE SIGN MY SHOES AFTER THE GAME!"

The change coincides with Bueckers' rising star power for fan moments involving footwear.

In May 2026, she was involved in a basketball shoe-related rock-paper-scissors bet and ended up losing, so she decided it would be wiser to ask for an autograph instead of a free pair.

This leads us to the initial reason Bueckers appeared in street clothes. The rookie guard did not play in Saturday's game against the Portland Fire because of an unanticipated right ankle injury, the Wings said just before tipoff.

The absence of Bueckers has not diminished Dallas' appearance as a distinct unit this season.

Arike Ogunbowale and Azzi Fudd stepped up alongside Bueckers to keep the offence going while she was away, and the Wings are currently 8-4 after managing just 10 victories throughout the previous season.

While the crowd was busy rearranging their banners, the Wings' coaching staff had a more substantial reason to explain why they were holding out on Bueckers.

Wings Coach Explains The Decision To Sit Paige Bueckers

Head coach Jose Fernandez of the Wings spoke out about it before the game, and his words revealed the team's strategy for dealing with Bueckers' recovery going forward.

“It’s a long year,” Fernandez told ESPN’s Kendra Andrews.

"Paige wants to be on the floor tonight, but the best thing for her longevity, for her career, for the franchise is her making sure we take care of her, and she takes care of her body," he added.

Fernandez also affirmed that Bueckers' situation will continue to be day-to-day. Last season, the first overall pick of the 2025 WNBA Draft went on to win Rookie of the Year, All-Star, and second team All-WNBA honours.

On the season, she has shot 52.3% from the field, 42.9% from beyond the arc, and 78.6% from the charity stripe. Her averages are 19.8 points, 3.6 boards, and 5.8 assists.

Will Bueckers return to the court before the Wings' next big test? Drop your thoughts in the comments.
