‘One of My Biggest Regrets’: Coco Gauff Opens Up About Serena Williams

The 4th-seeded American Coco Gauff has commented on the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion, Serena Williams, after her dominating second-round win against Egypt's Mayar Sherif by 6-3, 6-2.

Coco Gauff is defending her French Open title and was asked a question regarding Williams' alleged comeback. Gauff spoke hopefully about the rumours, praising Williams' legacy.

"That would be really cool; I did say one of my biggest regrets was not being able to play her," Gauff said. "Everybody’s been hearing rumors and stuff, so if they are true, I guess we’ll find out in a couple of days based off the rumors. We’ll see."

She further stated, "But I think it would be for the sport to have a legend back playing."

The rumors spread when The Telegraph’s Simon Briggs reported on Williams comeback plans on the grass courts.

"Williams – who is 44 – re-entered the anti-doping testing pool in August last year, in the first significant hint that she was ready to reconsider." Briggs wrote.

The reports suggest Williams asked to be a wild-card entry into the Lawn Tennis Association’s flagship event. Jon Wertheim also said, on the legend Andy Roddick’s “Served” podcast, that Williams is looking to play a grass-court season at Queen's Club.

Gauff, who has admired Williams and wanted to play against her, hopes that the rumors are true. But while further reports confirm Williams' comeback, Gauff needs to focus on what's next for her till then.

How Can Coco Gauff Defend Her Title?

After winning the first two rounds fairly comfortably, Gauff will now face World No. 21, Anastasia Potapova, in the third round of the French Open.

The two-time Grand Slam champion showed some elite shotmaking in the previous game against Sherif.

With this win, she also now has 80 wins in Grand Slam tournaments, a feat last achieved by Maria Sharapova while being under 23.

While Gauff has excellent court awareness and extraordinary power behind her shots, she has also been working on her forehand to make it more reliable.

Her backhand, though, is one of the finest at the French Open this season, and by combining it with defense, she can create counter-attacking opportunities to her advantage.

Also, her incredible court coverage allows her to reach tight spaces to save her from leaking points to her opponent. The 22-year-old will be looking to sweep past Potapova as well this Friday.
