Minnesota Lynx rookie guard Olivia Miles started the game with a scoreless first quarter on Sunday, but it took her only one free throw to break WNBA records in a 101-89 victory against the Connecticut Sun.
Olivia Miles went into the game tied with Caitlin Clark from the Indiana Fever with 769 points, the rookie record set by Clark in 2024. After a free throw 29 seconds into the second quarter, she broke the record for good and ended the game shooting 7 for 10 from the field.

"It was more of a relief," Miles said postgame. "Those things tend to loom over your head."
Clark had been sitting on the mark after overtaking Seimone Augustus 744 points since 2006, while Miles equalled the feat in the exact number of 40 games that Clark took to do it initially.
Miles' way of talking about the milestone reflected that framing, entirely removing credit from herself.
"It's special, but it means we're more so working well as a team. I have great teammates around me, great vets who allow me to be me out there," Miles said.
Olivia Miles scored 21 points, dished out 6 assists, and grabbed 3 rebounds in her last game on September 20, 2026, helping the Minnesota Lynx beat the Connecticut Sun 101–89.
Recently, Miles had beaten Clark's rookie three-point record in June by making eight shots against the Golden State Valkyries, becoming the quickest rookie to achieve 350 points, 100 rebounds, and 100 assists in just 21 games against Clark's 22 games.
Clark’s response to that record exchange was not going to remain one-sided for very long.

Clark put up 25 points against the Washington Mystics before taking on Minnesota, giving her 862 points for the year and a record as a point guard in the WNBA.

Clark scored that mark in only 38 games, two fewer than what it took her to reach the 769-point plateau during her rookie season, scoring 22.7 points per game on 45.1 percent shooting this season.
The two guards will be playing alongside each other twice before the start of the playoffs, starting when Indiana plays host to Minnesota on Tuesday, and then Minnesota wraps up its regular season on Thursday.
Those final meetings have significance for more than just personal records, as Minnesota is trying for the number one seed and Indiana requires victories in both games to avoid finishing as low as the number eight seed.
