“Not To Do a Fashion Show.”: Defeated Star Deflects Question About Naomi Osaka’s Dramatic Outfit

Naomi Osaka once again turned heads with a bold outfit choice for her first-round match at the French Open. But it also seemed like her opponent was not too happy about it.

The Japanese star walked onto the court wearing a dramatic custom black sequined corset with a long pleated mesh train designed by Swiss couturier Kevin Germanier. The blinging golden strips all over her outfit made it a rare outfit for a tennis match.

After the match, Osaka's opponent, Laura Siegemund, was asked about the rival's outfit. She told TNT Sports, “I couldn't care less." The German native also said, "I come here to play tennis, not to put on a fashion show. And if others want to put on a fashion show, then they should go ahead and do it. That's totally fine with me."

The frustration may have come from how the match unfolded. Siegemund was leading 5-3 in the second set before Osaka fought back and eventually secured a 6-3, 7-6(3) win in 1 hour and 56 minutes.

Their head-to-head history may have added another layer as well. The 38-year-old German won their first two meetings at the Indian Wells Open and the Italian Open. However, Osaka later responded with wins in Charleston, the US Open, and now again at Roland Garros.

Still, when it comes to fashion, this is far from the first time Naomi Osaka’s fashion choices have created headlines during a major tournament.

Naomi Osaka Worried Her Outfit Was Too Reflective

Naomi Osaka actually brought two backup dresses with her for her match at Roland Garros. The Japanese star admitted she became nervous after seeing how reflective the outfit looked under the sunlight.

“I just think it’s kinda funny. Ironically, when I first saw the dress in real life, I felt like I look like the Eiffel Tower at night time," Osaka said during her post-match press conference.

"I actually got a little worried because when the sun hits the dress, it reflects a lot. I was a little scared that the umpire was gonna like kick me off the court. So I got like two backup normal Nike dresses...Thank god I didn’t have to wear them though."

Osaka also made it clear that fashion has become one of the main ways she expresses herself publicly. The four-time Grand Slam champion explained that because she is naturally quiet, she enjoys letting her outfits speak for her.

Earlier this year at the Australian Open, Osaka also grabbed attention with another dramatic look. She wore an ocean-toned tie-dye warm-up jacket with soft frills, paired with flowing white wide-leg pants and a pleated mini-skirt layered on top. She completed the outfit with a wide-brimmed hat and a matching parasol.

Her custom Nike outfit at the Indian Wells Open also became a major talking point. That look featured an animal-print top and shorts, along with custom accessories such as ear cuffs, grills, mesh gloves, and a chainmail skirt designed by Filipino-American designer Chris Habana.

Now, with a second-round match against Donna Vekić coming up, many fans are already curious to see what Osaka decides to wear next.
