Athletes in very distinct sports have little to say to one another, except when the success of someone like Caitlin Clark cannot be overlooked by even the most successful athlete in the sport of soccer.
That athlete is Alex Morgan. In a video published on Monday, July 6, by Just Women's Sports, the retired Team USA striker complimented Clark's fast progression through the ranks.
"What she was able to accomplish both at Iowa and then now in the WNBA and personally for her brand is something that really no female athlete has been able to do at her age," Morgan said via The Roku Channel.
The comment from Morgan illustrates the quick advancement made by Clark in two tiers of competitions.
This achievement can be traced to Iowa, where Clark scored the most points for any basketball player in the history of college basketball, scoring 3,951 points with an average of 28.4 points per game.
Clark shattered the record for the highest point scorer set by Pete Maravich and became the first Division I player ever to score 3,800 points and make 1,000 assists.
Clark's domination continued in the WNBA, where she was named the Rookie of the Year in 2024, recording an average of 19.2 points along with leading the league in assists with an average of 8.4 per game, breaking rookies' records in both assists and points in a single season.
The reasons behind this can be understood through the achievements of Clark in her college and professional career.
Morgan’s appreciation for Clark did not begin with the Instagram video. It can be traced back a few years to an iconic crossover moment in her career.
Alex Morgan Wore a Caitlin Clark Iowa Jersey During Her Final USA Stint
Morgan established herself as an icon through participation in four World Cups, representing Team USA for the first time in 2011. At the age of 37, she won the World Cup with the national team two times, including the 2015 historic victory after 16 years.
In her fourth and last SheBelieves Cup training camp of 2024, Morgan attended a viewing party for the Women’s Final Four of that year. Morgan came to this viewing party in an Iowa Hawkeyes jersey that belonged to Caitlin Clark.
This move is important as it brought together two completely different sports through respect. In the same Final Four, Clark's squad won against UConn 71-69 before meeting South Carolina in the final game.
But Iowa ended up losing to Staley's Gamecocks 87-75. It was their second consecutive final appearance, becoming one of the greatest streaks in recent college basketball history.
