The WNBA has broken viewer records by reaching 88.5 million unique viewers prior to the All-Star break; this is more than all of 2025. However, for forward Nneka Ogwumike of the Los Angeles Sparks, it does not necessarily mean recognition for her game.

During a conversation with Matt Barnes from The Shop YouTube series, Ogwumike talks about the neglect of the basketball aspect of the game.

"Isn't talking about the game. A lot of media hasn't even watched us, so we feel that a lot. And it's unfortunate because a lot of our players, we care so much about the game… we're in a league that's built on a platform that stands for a lot of different things… so, there are just so many different intersections. I do think that we try to manage it as best as we can, but it really sucks."

That frustration is understandable for a season which has seen 47 games watched by more than one million people each, more than the 21 seasons before combined, but headlines are often chasing controversy over performance.

Her frustrations mirror a summer that was filled with off-the-court drama, especially involving gender eligibility in the wake of comments made by Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham.

The discussion brought into play ex-NBA stars Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White, who took advantage of the undefined eligibility rules of the league to make their draft declaration stunt, thus diverting attention completely from the game itself.

With the clamor within the league increasing, comes the talk of who will eventually be its leader.

Cathy Engelbert Praises Nneka Ogwumike's Steady Leadership

Ogwumike’s frustration comes at a time of larger change, with Commissioner Cathy Engelbert slated to retire and Ogwumike being named a potential replacement.

Engelbert was quite generous in her comments about Ogwumike, stating, “There is no telling the story of the WNBA’s recent success and evolution without Nneka Ogwumike.”

She continued, "She is a champion and MVP, one of the most accomplished players of all time, and a fierce competitor who has represented the very best our game has to offer."

That kind of praise is reflective of all that Ogwumike has done in 15 years, winning a WNBA championship and being named the MVP, as well as a decade as the union president spearheading two major labor agreements. It remains to be seen whether Ogwumike ends up in the commissioner’s seat.
