The Minnesota Lynx showcased another dominant display on Monday, June 15, when they won against the Portland Fire by a 33-point margin, 107-74. One of the stars of the game was veteran Nia Coffey, with coach Cheryl Reeve's vision working brilliantly for the team.
Coffey scored her season-high 15 points, had five rebounds, dished out four assists, and made three steals and blocks. With that, she became the fifth Lynx player, alongside Nicky Anosike, Napheesa Collier, Sylvia Fowles, and Maya Moore, to come up with these numbers.
"It feels good. I always loved how the Lynx played. It just felt weird because I was always on other teams," Coffey reflected on her performance after the game.
"I'm glad it was a possibility for me to be on this team. I love the way we play. I love our coaching staff and our players. It’s great. So I’m glad it worked out."
Coffey shared that she had always followed the Lynx and, when she was finally here, that she liked the environment and the people she was surrounded by.
Coffey comes from the Twin Cities area in Minnesota and has changed teams five times in her 10-year WNBA career.
She has previously played for the San Antonio Stars, the Las Vegas Aces, the Phoenix Mercury, the Los Angeles Sparks, and the Atlanta Dream.
But how has Coffey performed so far this season, and how have the Lynx been under Cheryl Reeve this season?
Nia Coffey And The Minnesota Lynx Run In Fine Form With Cheryl Reeve's Guidance
The Lynx have been on fire, holding a 12-3 record. The Lynx were also dominant last season, posting a 34-10 regular-season record before losing to the Phoenix Mercury in the Semi-Finals, 1-3.
Unlike most of her career, Coffey has been a key contributor to her team this season, averaging 8.7 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game.
She has also been accurate in scoring three-pointers, scoring 1.8 per game with 43.9 percent accuracy.
Reeve has used offseason additions Coffey and Natasha Howard more on the offensive end, with Howard also averaging 17.8 points, three assists, and 7.4 rebounds per game.
Reeve has also used rookie Olivia Miles effectively off the bench, with the rookie averaging 18.1 points, 5.9 assists, and five rebounds.
This differs from her earlier system, where she depended more on her veteran players like Napheesa Collier, averaging 22.9 points and 7.3 rebounds last season, and Kayla McBride, averaging 14.2 points and 3.5 assists.
With the win against the Fire, they now hold a 5-1 record in the Commissioner's Cup and stand second in the standings. But this changes when it comes to the league standings, with the Lynx leading the league.
The Lynx will next play the Sparks on Wednesday, June 17, at the Crypto.com Arena.
