The Dallas Wings had no business getting the favorable outcome against the Chicago Sky, but Paige Bueckers' fourth-quarter comeback sealed it for Jose Fernandez's side.
Bueckers shot just 1-of-5 from deep and spent much of the night hunting for rhythm. However, as Bueckers previously stated that adrenaline is the best drug, she put that thought to good use in the final 2:27 left on the clock.
The 2025 No. 1 overall pick poured in 10 points to help the Wings overcome the Sky. And when the shot wasn't dropping, she finished with 8 assists, 7 rebounds, and 2 steals. Following the game, Bueckers was speechless at how the team pulled off the comeback.
"I don't even think I have words. I just, I cannot believe we just won that game. Speaks to our resilience, our fight, our never quit mentality. Everybody held it down. I was terrible for the first 38 minutes. And we just stuck together. Everybody stepped up in different ways at different times and we just never quit." Bueckers said postgame.
“I try to affect the game in other ways. Maybe be better defensively, rebound more, get my teammates open a little bit more, and just have positive self-talk,” Bueckers said.
After three quarters, the Wings trailed 71-57 with next to no hope that a rally of points was about to surge their way. But the fourth quarter flipped the script.
Thanks to forward Jessica Shephard's 7 points, the Wings opened the fourth quarter on a 12-5 run to cut the margin to 76-69 with 7:09 left, then leaned on the free-throw line as Chicago slipped into the bonus.
The ending stretch turned frantic after Sydney Taylor's three-pointer and Skylar Diggins' free throws built a 92-86 lead for the Sky with only 35.7 seconds left.
However, the Bueckers' show started from there on out, as she answered with a four-point play, drilling a 3-pointer through contact and adding the free throw to draw Dallas within 92-91 with 30.6 seconds left.
Fortunately for the Wings, Kamila Cardoso turned the ball over to commit her sixth foul, as Li Yueru finished the game with the go-ahead free throws.
Fans on social media were as hyped as Bueckers following the win, as they were not shy of celebrating the comeback.
Fans React to Paige Bueckers' Comments Following the Comeback Victory
HC Jose Fernandez said postgame that Bueckers is the kind of player who does not even need coaching and is already one of the best players on the planet.
Bueckers' fourth-quarter thriller showed her talents to the maximum, as fans on social media went berserk over her performance.
"I love my self-aware goat" one fan commented on Bueckers' postgame interview, where she mentioned her poor performance through the first three quarters before taking the stage in the fourth quarter.
"One of the reasons I love PB5! It’s not just the talent, but you can really see how much she puts her heart and soul into a game." Another user was in awe of watching Bueckers show so much emotion following the comeback.
"Go Paige! Go wings! Thank you Azzi for the defense" a fan cheered on Bueckers, but did not forget to credit No. 1 overall draft pick Azzi Fudd's defensive contributions. Fudd also hit one at a line to close the gap to 92-87 for the Wings, as Bueckers took it over from there to seal the victory.
The Wings now extend their record to 10-6 for the season, and will now go on the road to face the Seattle Storm on Monday night.
