Monica McNutt Challenges After Becky Hammon's Controversial Jalen Brunson Take

The New York Knicks analyst Monica McNutt doesn't agree with Las Vegas Aces coach Becky Hammon doubling down on her statement from 2023, where she refused to put Jalen Brunson on the level of a 1A.

McNutt responded to Becky Hammon's comment while being a guest on The Post’s “Schein Time” with Adam Schein. McNutt opposed Hammon, but with a different point.

"Honestly, Adam, historically, she was not wrong," She said. "But I remember her saying, and I was like, ‘Oh, saying that to the wrong fanbase, my girl.’ And I, too, adore Becky Hammon. She’s a Hall of Famer."

Rather than disagreeing with the point itself, she thought that it mattered more what kind of fanbase her comments hurt. She later elaborated on the social dynamics of the criticism.

"She picked the wrong fanbase, and I will add, as a woman in this space, I think it’s easy to pile on women in this space." She said. "But I get it, I’ve said some crazy things as an analyst too."

Becky Hammon talked about Brunson on Tuesday, doubling down on her statement back in 2023, and further made comparisons with Allen Iverson.

"Allen Iverson got MVP, and he lost in the finals," Hammon said. "I think the two best teams are probably in the West, but I’m up for being proven wrong."

Hammon has been adamant about her take on the 2026 Eastern Conference finals MVP. But what does McNutt have to say about Brunson?

The guard's trajectory since Hammon's 2023 remarks has been nothing short of historic.

Monica McNutt On Jalen Brunson And His Success After Hammon's Statement

While McNutt respected Hammon's take on Brunson, she did have her own opinion on him, saying how he has proven his doubters wrong so far.

"At every stop, he has been one that has been doubted — and for whatever reason — but all he has done is won." She said.

"There are some people among us that just have that winning gene and I would describe Jalen Brunson as one of those guys."

But how has Brunson been doing since Hammon's comment on him back in 2023?

Well, he has led his team to back-to-back conference finals appearances, while also winning the Larry Bird Trophy on Monday.

Additionally, he has also led the Knicks to their first Finals since 1999. The Knicks superstar has averaged 26 points, 6.8 assists and 3.3 rebounds per game in the regular season.

His playoff statistics are also impressive, with him averaging 26.9 points, 6.6 assists, and 2.8 rebounds per game. McNutt acknowledged Hammon's historical perspective while championing Brunson's current impact.

The Knicks have yet to find out who they will play in the NBA Finals, but Brunson looks determined to make history and could prove Hammon wrong after all.
