At just 19 years old, Mirra Andreeva has made history with yet another dominant performance at the French Open and seems to have borrowed another unique trait to add to this year's performances.
Andreeva revealed her newly viral tradition of thanking herself during her post-match interview through some unexpected inspiration.
"At first, when I said that in a speech, I just saw Snoop Dogg say it when he was receiving an award. So for the first couple of times, I kind of stole it just to make a joke. But then I kind of realised that it's actually true. We also have to thank ourselves for the work that we do on the court," Andreeva said in her post-match interview on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
Andreeva's references were to something very real. She played Romanian veteran Sorana Cirstea and won 6-0, 6-3 in 56 minutes. Andreeva's match featured her serving at 78%. She also hit a perfect 6 of 6 on break points.
Andreeva's win represented her 19th match win at Roland Garros, a record for a female player in the 21st century. She also became the youngest female player to win the most matches at the French Open.
This tournament, Andreeva has only lost one set, and that was a second-round match against Marina Bassols Ribera, which ended 6-1, 6-1.
Andreeva reached the Roland Garros semi-final in 2024, at the age of 17. Her current run is a case of continuation, as she is still at the same level that she left off before most players at her age had figured out the game.
Andreeva's current run is a continuation of that trajectory, and now the future that run holds is also the biggest test of her career thus far.
Mirra Andreeva Faces Marta Kostyuk With a French Open Title on the Line
Two wins are standing in the way of Andreeva to win her first Grand Slam title; however, the win needed for her to reach the finals may be her hardest yet.
After beating Cirstea by a score of 6-0, 6-3, Andreeva has a semifinal matchup against Marta Kostyuk on June 4th. This is her second career appearance in a Grand Slam semifinal.
It is bound to be a challenging match for Andreeva, as Kostyuk is coming off a victory against Elina Svitolina by a score of 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. This brings her clay season winning streak to 17, and also brings Kostyuk to her first Grand Slam semifinal.
Historically, Andreeva has not fared too well against Kostyuk, as she lost to her at the 2026 Brisbane International 7-6, 6-3, and also lost to her in the 2026 Madrid Open final, which was Kostyuk’s first WTA 1000 title, in a clay match by a score of 6-3, 7-5. Andreeva has not taken a single set off Kostyuk in their four prior meetings.
Andreeva is looking to turn the tide in their second clay match, and their third overall meeting, which will take place in a high-stakes semifinal.
Comment on your prediction: Will Andreeva finally break the streak, or will Kostyuk dominate the clay?
