Sometimes, all you need is just one win, and the Phoenix Mercury's Natasha Mack provided just that against the Seattle Storm on Wednesday night to finally move past their six-game losing streak.
Mack was easily the MVP of the night, scoring a career-high 16 points on 7-of-7 shooting, while also adding 10 rebounds and 3 blocks. She demonstrated her two-way impact every minute she was on the floor.
This led to her attaining a third double-double this season, after only having one coming into the new season.
Phoenix's urgency to get a W was seen from the start of the first quarter itself, where they went on an 11-0 run after Seattle scored the first bucket.
But the Mercury's clutch instinct was on display late in the fourth quarter, when they held Seattle to just 13 points on 4-of-16 shooting. Phoenix stayed together, answered runs, and got back in the win column to begin this road trip.
“The fact we were on the same page and we were all connected,” Monique Akoa Makani said. “It didn’t matter who was making a mistake or not. The energy we had out there was just hiding those mistakes.”
The game ended 72-68 in the Mercury's favor, but the difference could have very well been in double digits if not for key lapses in the second and third quarters.
Now, with momentum by their side, the Mercury will look to add more wins to their name if they want to have any scope of entering back-to-back WNBA Finals.
While this game brought a much-needed victory for Phoenix, it also added important accomplishments to the resumes of a few players.
Phoenix Mercury's Numbers Beyond the Box Score
DeWanna Bonner moved up to 5th all-time on the league's leaderboards in field goals made. She has made a total of 2,631 buckets in her career, officially surpassing Hall of Famer Tina Thompson, who played in the WNBA from 1997 to 2013.
Meanwhile, Kahleah Copper moved into 9th in franchise history in both points (1,420) and three-pointers made (140).
The Mercury's clutchness in defense in the fourth quarter came into fruition as well. With just five free throw attempts for Seattle, it was the 18th time (14-4) in franchise history that the team had reduced its opponents to five or fewer attempts in free throws.
Last year's finalists will now look to win their fourth game of the season against expansion side Portland Fire in the Pacific Northwest.
This will be the first time the Mercury will take on the Fire since they rejoined the league as an expansion side this year.
So, do you think the Phoenix Mercury can up the momentum and finally get back to winning ways to reach the playoffs? Let us know in the comments.
