Marina Mabrey just made WNBA history in terms of scoring, and the exchange she shared with Angel Reese is the perfect example of the WNBA social media spirit. In the evening on Thursday, a historical event became an inside joke between two old teammates.
Reese posted on X, joking that Mabrey deserved a ride in her Rolls-Royce after scoring 53 points, “Yeah, I guess Marina deserves a ride in the RR. ”
“Finallyyyyy,” was the one-word response of Mabrey on X to this post.
The background to the whole conversation helps make it more effective. Before that, Mabrey had made a comment on a TikTok post of Reese, who was showing her new Rolls-Royce Cullinan. "Ok, yeah, I'm officially jealous, I want that car," wrote Mabrey in the comment.
Words like those cannot go unnoticed. Mabrey scored 17 of 28 from the field and 9 of 18 from beyond the arc, and set another record by scoring the most three-pointers in a single game.
However, the connection between the two goes beyond that. Mabrey and Reese were teammates during Reese’s rookie year in 2024 with the Chicago Sky. Their relationship from back then has not been affected by their transition to different teams.
Mabrey was traded to Connecticut, then selected by Toronto in the expansion draft. Reese has since been traded to the Atlanta Dream in April.
Nonetheless, even though the chemistry between the two is intriguing to watch, it’s actually the display by Mabrey last night on the court that lays the foundation for everything.
Marina Mabrey's Historic 53-Point Night With Toronto Tempo
Mabrey had made history in Thursday's game by scoring 53 points as her team crushed the LA Sparks by a score of 125-97, matching the single-game scoring record in the WNBA set by Liz Cambage in 2018 and A'ja Wilson in 2023.
Mabrey shared thoughts about how smoothly the night went for her in the post-game press conference.
"I think Thursday was just my night from the three-point line, and honestly, from everywhere," Mabrey said. "It was all going in."
She also secured six rebounds, had two assists, and recorded a ridiculous plus-36. The 125 points scored by the team have broken the record for scoring the most points in a regulation game in the WNBA. What's more interesting is what's behind this.
This year, Mabrey is averaging 21.2 points, 3.6 assists, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.1 steals, which is way up compared to last year when she was scoring only 15 points per game.
Will Mabrey maintain this momentum while playing for Toronto in their next game? Comment down.
