While Skip Bayless has been a huge Caitlin Clark supporter throughout this season, he did not mince his words following her errors in the overtime loss against the Las Vegas Aces at home.
Clark finished with 20 points and eight assists, but her productive night was overshadowed by two costly mistakes in the closing seconds. Aces' Chelsea Gray capitalized with two stunning buzzer-beaters in an 86-84 overtime loss.
Clark and the Fever's miscues prompted Bayless to place the blame for the loss directly on the Fever star.
“This awful home loss is on Caitlin,” Bayless wrote on X. “Missed both clinching free throws late in reg, then terrible turnover late in OT. Chelsea Gray made her pay both times with stunning clutch 3s, to tie at the buzzer then win it at the buzzer. Congrats to Chelsea/Aces, who were down 20.”
With seven seconds left in the fourth quarter, the Fever led 75-72 with Clark on the free-throw line. It was all but done if Clark scored at least once, but she missed both times.
It was a delight for the Aces, as the veteran Gray scored a three-pointer at the buzzer. It was a painful swing for a Fever team that had been seconds away from securing its 20th victory of the season.
It was deja vu in overtime, as Clark had another opportunity to help Indiana close the game. The Fever led 84-83 with seven seconds remaining and had possession, but Clark’s pass was intercepted.
And once again, the Aces put the ball in Gray's hands, who once again scored a three and won it for the reigning champions, all while silencing the Fever crowd.
It was a heartbreaking loss for Stephanie White's team, who were on a roll recently.
The Indiana Fever Loses Momentum with Back-To-Back Losses
The Fever team was on a high coming off a string of victories thanks to their offensive prowess. It also awarded players like Kelsey Mitchell and Caitlin Clark the Player of the Month and Week honors, respectively. White also won Coach of the Month.
But this was a mentally draining defeat, as Indiana controlled such a large portion of the contest. Blowing a 20-point lead would have been difficult enough to accept, but the Fever also had separate opportunities to put the game away in regulation and overtime.
The Fever dropped to 19-12 for the season with two consecutive defeats, following a five-game win streak.
Clark and the Fever cannot dwell on such losses for now, as they still have time to climb up the standings. Such a loss will just strengthen the team for their next challenges, and Indiana is aiming big this season.
