Monday night saw a highly contested game between the Indiana Fever and the Washington Mystics, which ended with a win for the Fever by 78-76. Caitlin Clark drove to the basket with one problem — Michaela Onyenwere's hand wrapped around her arm. The whistle never came.
This win came as payback for the Fever after the Mystics beat the Fever in their previous face-off, 104-102 in overtime. However, fans noticed a moment of Clark being physically held back that forced them to question the referees.
Clark was driving towards the paint for a layup when No. 12 forward Michaela Onyenwere was seen holding Clark's arm in the paint. Referees did not feel the need to award a foul in this case.
Clark, on the other hand, looked to brush off any disturbances and continue her fine form in the game. She scored 19 points, dished out five assists, and had three rebounds in the game. She also scored four three-pointers in the game.
Not only that, but the 2024 No. 1 pick also came in clutch for her team, scoring a 31-footer three-pointer to give Indiana a 2-point lead in the final 1.2 seconds of the game.
With this win secured, the Fever's record improved to 6-5, with the team currently standing sixth in the league standings.
Although the game ended, the fans reacted to Clark and Onyenwere's tussle in the first quarter.
Fans Fuming at Caitlin Clark Being Held Down
The fans were surely surprised by the layup incident with no foul being called. Some of the fans commented on the post showing Clark's arm being held during the play.
"Sure does make that little soft hand touch on Citron that they called a foul look bad when compared to letting the Mystics hold her arm all the way to the basket," a fan commented.
The fan referred to a foul being called on guard Sonia Citron due to a soft touch hand. In contrast, there was no foul when Clark's hand was held down.
"Yeah. Teams grab her hook her and hold her all the time. It’s never called," another fan commented.
The fan noted that everyone notices how frustrated and angry Clark gets, suggesting they would also be fuming if held or grabbed without being given a call.
"everyone looks at her reaction & ignores why she’s p*****. I’d be fuming too if I was being grabbed, held, and bodied without calls but I can’t breathe on someone," they wrote.
"And this isn’t a foul? What a joke #wnba." Another fan commented.
One fan also thanked the WNBA account for pointing out the foul.
"ooo thank you so much to pointed the foul on this play, " the fan commented.
Amid the controversial foul that wasn't called, Clark and the Fever grabbed an important win. They will face the Chicago Sky next on Thursday, June 11. The Sky currently holds a record of 4-7.
