The Los Angeles Sparks were heading into the game against the New York Liberty with no expectations due to star player Kelsey Plum's injury issues. But fans can now take a sigh of relief after she has officially given an update herself.
Speaking during the Sparks' practice, Plum revealed that she has been one of the league's healthiest players and does not want to change that by showing up every day of the week.
"Yeah, just loving to play basketball. You know, it's another day to get better. We have a great opportunity tomorrow... I worked out in the morning, did all my stuff. If I wasn't there, I would be sitting on the couch watching the game. So you might as well go." Plum said, according to Sparks reporter John W. Davis.
The Sparks will hope that Plum keeps up such optimism throughout the season, as she is off to one of the best starts of her career.
In the 11 games Plum has played in so far, she’s averaging a career-best 25.0 points, which is good enough for second in the league just behind A'ja Wilson, 2.1 rebounds, 6.4 assists, and 1.3 steals.
In addition, she’s shooting 54 percent from the field, 40.5 percent from the 3-point line, and 80.3 percent from the free-throw line.
Following an ankle sprain, Plum missed three games earlier this season, and the Sparks lost two in her absence.
Sparks head coach Lynne Roberts knows how important Plum is, but was still more cautious as to how Plum's injury will be treated. Because other than Plum, she also has to look out for another star player's injury, Cameron Brink.
Lynne Roberts is Not Making Any Promises Regarding Plum's Injury
Following Friday's practice session, Roberts acknowledged that Brink would definitely be out for the game against the Liberty, but Plum's case can be considered day-to-day.
“KP is day-to-day. I don’t know if she’s going to play on Sunday, so it’ll probably be a Sunday decision, would be my guess. So hopefully we can get her out there a little tomorrow [at practice], see how she looks, but we’re not gonna rush her,” Roberts said.
“Cameron is out. She’s got a good ankle sprain that she’s rehabbing the heck out of, but that’s a ways away.”
Brink initially suffered the ankle injury in the second half of the Sparks’ loss to the Golden State Valkyries on Monday. She exited to the locker room and did not return
With more than a quarter of the season done already, the Sparks find themselves with a record of 7-8. For the Sparks to reach their first playoffs since 2020, consistency is key from here on.
The New York Liberty is looking to start a new streak against the injury-plagued Sparks after having its eight-game winning streak snapped on Friday night against the Washington Mystics.
But with Plum feeling confident about herself, there is a good chance that we will see her on the hardwood on Sunday night against the Liberty, if only for a limited amount of time.
So, do you think Kelsey Plum would be the difference maker for the Sparks once again? Let us know in the comments.
