Kelsey Mitchell Explains Why Early Season Turmoil Can Be a Good Thing

Three-time WNBA All-Star Kelsey Mitchell has an explanation as to why the Indiana Fever's early turmoil can actually be a positive thing for the team ahead.

Mitchell has shifted the narrative of the heated argument between the Fever's head coach, Stephanie White, and the two-time WNBA All-Star, Caitlin Clark, during the 100-84 loss to the Portland Fire.

"Seeing frustration across the board as a pro these last 9 years, it means you give a damn," she said. "You guys saw turmoil, but it’s good for us because it’s passion. Turmoil is good, especially if you get it early. It just can’t be the deciding factor to how hard you play. It becomes counterproductive."

She dismissed any claims that the two had a ruptured relationship over the past few days, saying that the turmoil instead shows passion and that everyone cares about the team.

"The goal is to always be honest about where the h*** you are, and we’re not that great right now." Mitchell further elaborated. "If you’re honest about that, you can put it in the right work."

Mitchell believes maintaining honesty about the team's current form is the only way to improve. Indiana have lost two straight games against the Golden State Valkyries and the Fire.

The Fever will now look to get back to winning ways in their upcoming game. Mitchell remains a bright spot for Indiana despite the team's difficult start.

Kelsey Mitchell And The Fever Face A Tough Challenge Up Ahead

The Fever have won four of the eight games they have played so far. Despite a disappointing start for the preseason title contenders, Indiana has seen several standout individual performances.

First is veteran Mitchell, who has been averaging the highest points per game on the team at 20.6. Aliyah Boston and Clark have also been tremendous in terms of scoring points, averaging 15.9 and 20.1 points per game so far.

They will face the Atlanta Dream next, who have the highest rebounds per game at 37.4 and have a flourishing record of 6-2. The Fever would need to be careful on defense, as Atlanta could take advantage of their weak defense in the paint.

Clark would also hope to get back to form. In the previous game, she scored only six points for the team and was replaced by rookie Raven Johnson amid a heated argument between her and White.

Rising star Angel Reese will also pose a threat to the Fever, having the most rebounds this season at 11.3. All in all, it is going to be an interesting game on Thursday, June 4, 2026.
