Kayla McBride’s next big move comes off the basketball court and with family

Minnesota Lynx guard Kayla McBride has spent most of her life chasing basketball dreams. Now, she is chasing something different.

McBride and her younger sister, former Indiana Hoosiers basketball player Karlee McBride-Webber, are teaming up off the court to open 1122 Coffee Company in downtown Concord, North Carolina.

“We really wanted to make 1122 Coffee Company more than a coffee shop,” McBride-Webber told CharlotteFive, per the Charlotte Observer.

This sister-owned business is named after 1122, the street address of the childhood home where Kayla and Karlee grew up in Erie, Pennsylvania.

Back then, the sisters traveled a lot across the country. And during those long road trips, the sisters made a habit of visiting local coffee shops instead of big corporate chains.

Now, they are bringing those sweet memories and that cozy living room feel right back to their new neighborhood.

“It’s about ... bringing our living room to the neighborhood. You can expect a lot of culture and (elements) of how we grew up,” said McBride as per the Charlotte Observer.

The menu will feature espresso, cappuccinos, vanilla chai lattes, and iced matcha. The sisters are using locally roasted coffee beans, fresh North Carolina ingredients, and special house-made syrups.

Guests can also order a blueberry-vanilla 1122 Latte, a matcha topped with blueberry cold foam, and a brown sugar honey latte, per axios.com.

To go with the drinks, the pastry case will be stocked with fresh treats from Mooresville’s Ladolka Deluxe Bakery. Visitors can order cinnamon rolls, ham-and-cheese croissants, and spinach croissants.

The sisters will pipe in 1990s sitcoms and vinyl—echoing the living-room feel they chased on those long drives.

The passion project Kayla McBride always wanted to do

Kayla McBride first shared her big dream with the public back in May during an interview with sportswriter Tom Noie for the South Bend Tribune.

She spoke about the coffee shop while working hard in the middle of her 13th WNBA season.

“It’s something (we) always wanted to do,” McBride said. “A passion project. I’m excited, but as I’m doing this, I’m completely locked in (to basketball).”

Basketball is still a huge part of Kayla's daily life, but her sister promised that an extra special sweet treat is coming soon.

The 1122 Coffee Company will officially hold its grand opening on Saturday, Sept. 5.

One can visit the shop at 25 Barbrick Ave SW, Suite 103 in downtown Concord. The store will be open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
