When extreme weather makes watching a match unbearable, the dedication of the fans becomes a different story. This realization hit Karolina Muchova after winning the biggest title of her grass-court career.
During the trophy presentation ceremony on June 27, Muchova turned her attention to the spectators. A clip of her thoughtful speech was shared by the X account @TennisChannel.
"It couldn't have been a better week here in Bad Homburg. Well, maybe if it was 10 degrees less, it could have been better...I feel like everyone who is coming this week deserves a medal because it's been hot like hell, and it's packed here. I don't see any seats empty. So you guys, it's spectacular. So thank you very much for coming out and supporting us," Muchova said.
Muchova is officially a grass-court champion. She secured the 2026 Bad Homburg Open title by defeating Naomi Osaka, who had to retire due to a foot injury. Germany was in the middle of a severe heat wave, but the loyal fans stayed in their seats despite the weather.
She also wished Naomi Osaka a speedy recovery, pointing out that both players had to travel to Wimbledon with only one day to rest.
Muchova was leading the match 6-1, 1-0 when it ended. This impressive victory marks her very first WTA 500 title and her first-ever trophy on a grass court.
Her week in Germany is about more than just surviving the heat and thanking the crowd. This victory now puts her in a great position for the rest of the season.
The impressive Bad Homburg run gives Karolina Muchova momentum ahead of Wimbledon
According to the WTA tennis website, Muchova received a bye in the first round before beating Irina-Camelia Begu. She then showed spirit to come back against Clara Tauson after losing the opening set.
She followed that up by defeating Elena-Gabriela Ruse in the semifinals, before beating Naomi Osaka in the final.
This win also adds a milestone to her playing record. It is the third WTA singles title of her professional career. She previously won the 2019 Korea Open and the 2026 Qatar Open.
This victory matters as she heads straight into Wimbledon. Muchova enters the tournament as the No. 10 seed. She is scheduled to face Anastasia Zakharova in the opening round.
After years of difficult injury setbacks, including wrist problems, Muchova has bounced back. She has now put together one of the absolute strongest seasons of her entire career with titles in both Doha and Bad Homburg.
